I am currently a manager in a computer department for a company in Ohio.
I will be turning 55 this summer and would like to retire. Here's the rub. My bills will consume my 401K leaving me with my pension to live on until social security.

I am anxious to get out of Ohio and the cold. I realize I need to adjust to an inexpensive life style to live on about $2,500 a month (currently make that in a week). This is a sacrifice I am willing to make to quit working (at least full time).

This may sound like a joke but hear is my desire. I am looking for a small town with less than 1,000 people in Arizona. A small apartment or mobile home my wife and I can rent that will allow us to live out our remaining years watching the world go by. While this may sound boaring to 99.9% of you it is my ideal life. I have had my share of toys (boats, motorcycles, fancy cars, etc). Want I want now is to just sit back and enjoy the remaining years of my life.

A town like Bouse looks just like the kind of place I am looking for. Low cost of living and nothing to do but watch the wind blow.

Anybody know of any other locations that I should consider?

If I were in your shoes and those were *my* exact desires. . I would choose Tombstone. $2500 a month - you can do that easily in Tombstone - most likely with leftovers. Good luck!

Hot Springs AK. The property taxes there, I believe, are the lowest in the U.S. It is growing, tons of shopping and the land is quite beautiful. The down side is that it is not in AZ.

Duh, nope meant AR. I see the ads on T.V, Erik Estrada pushes the development. It is pretty, but it isn't AZ.

There is a reason why they do infomercials on that land. IMO if it's a good deal, they would need no advertising. I see Chuck Woolery is doing one in the sticks outside of Dallas, too! I'm sure you are right about the taxes, and it's much more affordable to retire there.

We agree with you Nice,Nice! Why would they need Erik Estrada to push their homes. The HOA fees are $25 a month, so you can't get much. I do think some of the land is beautiful and the property taxes are very low, then again you do get what you pay for, lol.

Tombstone certainly seems to be an option. What is the availability of apartments and in what price range?

I am not looking for something fancy. Just someplace to cook and sleep. The rest of my time would be as stated earlier 'sitting and watching the world go by'.

Is health insurance for you and your wife taken care of?
If not the state you choose to live in can be a major factor.

If both of you are in good health Arizona should be able to provide fairly low cost premiums.
If there are any health issues New Mexico has a risk pool that is less than most states but still expensive. In any case medical premiums will reduce your monthly budget considerably.

Withdrawals from 401K plans cannot be taken until age 59 1/2 although there are some exceptions.
