You're insane to even consider it. You'd wear out your car in no time, not to mention what you'd spend on gas. That doesn't even take into account not having a life and the effect that all that commuting would have on your health (higher risk of getting in an accident from all that driving) and job performance.

I thought of this thread specifically on my drive back from Phx to LA.

I didn't see anywhere desirable to work and/or live anywhere drive-able on either side of the border.

No way. No how could anybody commute by car from Phoenix to LA. The distance is 370-miles and 6 hours. Moving is the ONLY option. Period.

yes I live in Arizona and commute to California where I work. I work in Los Angeles and have an apartment both in LA and in Phoenix.

California gives tax credit for five or six states. One of which is Arizona. So you will be paying by far, mostly Arizona state income taxes. I have done this in tax years 2003, 2004, 2005, part of 2006, part of 2008, and this tax year.

You probably come out ahead by $100 or so by commuting to CA. Also note you can still have an Arizona license, meaning registration is much cheaper for Arizona than CA.

There is a point in income/hourly rate where this live/work arrangement is advantageous, and it's up to your personal situation. It's advantageous to me. Besides I like both AZ and CA.

Also people are assuming you commute every day. You explicitly said you'd be in P.S. 4 days per week. You can fly direct between SkyHarbor Airport and Palm Springs, IIRC. It may be cost-effective.

I don't like to drive the 7 hours Friday nights from LA to Phoenix. I get home at 1:00am. And around 40 miles west of Phoenix I'm so tired that I fear I will fall asleep at the wheel.

If you earn your income in California, you get income tax credit for paying AZ state taxes. Yep, even if you don't work in AZ but live there, AZ taxes you. You end up paying very little to California.

You are talking about commuting across the Mojave Desert

I HAVE BEEN DOING EXACTLY THAT FOR A YEAR and thanks to the recession looks like I will continue doing so for the foreseeable future. I live in YUMA, AZ and work in greater LA. I leave Sun night/Mon am and return home Fri pm. AZ tax rate is 4.54, CA's is 9.55 for me. My 2400 SF house in Yuma would cost triple in CA what we paid for it. I drive 270 miles one way to work and have been doing this from July '09 til present (almost 1 year). Can't stand/can't afford/don't want to live in LA. Like my little small border town so yes, I will have about 50,000 miles on my new car this year.

Where do you sleep at night, in a hotel?

if you like driving, and you like filing tax returns, go ahead and make the effort. you will have to file three tax returns, one federal, one california, and one arizona return. my advice, bone up on the tax laws in both states and do the returns yourself, otherwise any money you make working in california over what you make in arizona will be eaten up by fuel costs, maintenance costs, and the cost of having someone do your tax returns. in my opinion the effort isnt worth any benefit you might gain, and i like to drive and do my own tax returns.

There is someone on this forum who does that, his handle is Howard Roark, you could dm him and see what he has to say. From his previous posts I believe he flies to CA though.
