I have driven from the east coast to California multiple times 40, 70 and 80. Go 40 in the winter. Boring is as boring does. I never find the vistas boring on those vast stretches in AZ and NM. . .or in Nevada and Utah. Think about stuff you otherwise wouldn't. Enjoy.

As time will not be so important..as i drive I-40 west as a newbie would it be worth it to detour on historic route 66 for what looks like 100 miles?..i'm kinda curious about it.

If you're talking about the stretch from Seligman to Kingman, then yes, by all means.
