Smile I know a bit about these places

Two years ago, I was offered a job in Pinetop/ Lakeside. They are really one town w/ two names. At that time, my wife's and my combined salary was going to be about $57K annually. We wanted to rent first for a year and make sure that we liked it. We could not find a rental that we could afford that wasn't a dump. Show Low is cheaper and we still couldn't find anything there for under $1300-$1400 p/month that wasn't a dump. The area has a high Native American population and a very large amount of Mormons and retirees. We actually didn't find the area to have very friendly people or a nice, small town atmosphere. The area is beautiful and the Blue Ridge School District in PL is first-rate unlike the schools in SL. If you and your husband gross less than $60 K annually, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a decent house in PL without a substantial down payment. SL will be cheaper but may also be bad now w/ the property value boom. There's a ton of houses in PL that are just weekenders and summer homes for the affluent from the Phoenix area. Personally, with the mix of second homes, retirees and an odd, not-so friendly concoction of people (more so in SL), I'm not crazy about the area. I just bought a house in Payson, AZ and I feel blessed already to live here. You may really like it in the White Mountains. If you can afford to live in PL, it wouldn't be a bad place to live. The climate is great, with true seasons and plenty of snow in the winter.

Thanks for the info, we would probably live in slow low, i love the snow and seasons, I will have my husband check out the housing if we cant afford a decent place there is no reason to move there. I am not to worried about native americans, central oregon where we came from has a reservation there, used to it, it would bother me more if there a little to no families as I have kids.

I have lived in Green Valley for twenty years (about 3 1/2 hours away from Phoenix and at 3,000 feet) and the heat is the only complaint that I would have about the Phoenix Metro area. Also Green Valley. The climate in Arizona is all dependant on the altitude. 4500 feet is pretty near ideal. 6,000 feet gets some snow. 7,000 feet gets a lot of snow. Phoenix Metro area is at about 1,500 to 2,000 feet and it gets VERY HOT with no snow. Hope that helps a little.

I live 11 miles Northeast of Show Low what there are several rentals for less than what you are looking for and obviously depending on your financial situation you can get a decent mortgage too. I love it here, moved from Phoenix. The schools are great in Show Low, I would not put my child in the Blue Ridge District if you want them to actually have an education. Bule Ridge is too centered on sports. Show Low Primary is one of the top 10 schools in the states. Also Show Low is a Character First city. If I can help in any other way e-mail me or let me know.

I live about 40 miles from Show Low but am there at least weekly.
Show Low is a beautiful mountain community. It is a fairly large place but has that small town feel to it.
It is close to the Apache Indian Reservation, and there are some gorgeous views to see there. A day trip down Salt River Canyon takes your breath away. There is actually a lot to do there as far as being in the outdoors.
Pinetop/Lakeside offers the same lifestyle. Actually, you may not even realize it when you leave one to go to the other.
If you need I can put you in touch with a realtor in the area.

If I got a great job offer in Show Low area, I would be out of here so fast you'd think I was on fire. This is a no-brainer - good bye and good luck!

Unhappy Moving to Showlow area

We moved from NV to Snowflake, Az 15 Mos. ago. Snowflake is 16 Mi. N. of Showlow. We picked it due to the golf course as we are retired. The prices to buy a nice home and to play golf are great. There is a large Mormon temple on the golf course. No secret it is predominatly mormon. We are not Mormon. I did not find this a problem until my daughter and her son came to live with us. She was ill and died here. We now have her 12 Yr. old son and are raising him. He hates the school. He is a great kid, good grades, good athlete but can't make friends. He is constantly bullied. It is bad enough to have lost his mother but can't bear to see him so lonely. We've tried scouts now and can see it is run by the church and they meet there. I'm broad minded and tolerant and have a hard time with people who are not. We loved it before. Why can't they be tolerant of non-Mormons or teach thier kids better manners. We may have to move now. Paul
