I am an experience deer hunter, but I am looking to get into elk hunting next season.

Anyone here into elk hunting? Any "tips" on good locations?

I have been scouting this season and there seems to be a ton near christopher creek.

do you know the draw requirements? Not easy. I have applied each year in the last twelve and had three tags - two bulls and one cow.

I suggest going to azsj.org. Join the chat board there. Don't ask for tips on your first post, but join in the discussions. people will help but will not give you honey holes.

There are quite a few elk near Christopher Creek. Once the snow falls on top of the rim, herds of elk migrate down the rim to the lower elevations. Not all, but some do.

When i've gone I like going up near Alpine, it is so pretty up there. Are you interested in cow elk hunting or bull elk hunting? And with rifle or bow? Getting drawn for elk with rifle isn't easy.

Where the now diminshed Morman Lake is there was thousands of elk eating in the grassy marsh. It was during summer time. Not sure if they herd there regualry though. Along the rim is great place, Woods Canyon Lake area

I must have been misinformed, I was told the draw was easier for elk. I am interested in bull elk, and rifle not bow.

Thanks for the info guys.

You can always buy an over the counter tag for certain areas....VERY low percentage hunt though.

Well deer is hard to get drawn for too. I am not sure which one is more difficult, I think it just depends which area you are looking to hunt in.

I have tried bow hunting before, it's just not for me.

Really? I have been drawn every time I applied, I got 2 tags last year, 1 tag this year, but it's only been 2 years and maybe I am just getting lucky?

I remember in the old days with less people you did'nt need such complicated permitting system, but I understands the need for it now. Freinds use to go out and get pronghorn. Tried it once and it had a sort of goat flavor, Never had it again. Love deer meat though. Never had elk.
