Good evening. My neighbor went on a hike in the Coronado National Forest near Safford today. Long story short, he was hiking with his two dogs, Eleana and Hannah when he lost his footing, and slid down the mountain a couple hundred feet into a creek bed. Although he is bruised and battered, he is alive to tell the story of his perils. Unfortunately, he got separated from his dogs and could not find them.

The two are mixed females. The one is black and brown in color and looks like a purebred Rotweiler. The other is coffee brown in color and looks almost like a lab with floppy ears. They are both tagged and are extraordinarily friendly and playful.

He is crushed! That is the understatement of the century. We live here in Tucson on the West side. He is a great dude and one of the best neighbors one could ever hope for. That being said, I would love to see him get reuinited with his doggies.

He does not remember the name of the particular trailhead that he was on. He was able to talk to a NPS LEO in the area along with several tourists in the area. They advised him that the particular area is a premier trailhead and a very popular spot during Christmas.

If anyone has ANY information, please post or PM me and I will give you my contact number. This was a horrible thing to happen to someone on Christmas of all days! Thank you so much in advance; and please pray that he can find his dogs alive and well!

I surely hope he finds them and this story has a happy ending... this is a lesson to everyone about why hiking solo is not a good idea.

I have some updated info: I received a text from my neighbor this AM. He advised that the trail was called the Arcatia Trail which is off 366 (Forest Service Road number?) and south of Safford. Unfortunately, I was unable to join him because I have to be at work in an hour.

If you guys and gals are/were hiking in that area or know of anyone who may have hiked that area yesterday or today, please spread the word. Thank you again.

Thank you to all who took a look at my posts. My neighbor and I went out to Safford and embarked on the snowy, cold and perilous hike up Mt. Graham yesterday. My neigbor hiked up to the area where he slid down the mountain (I had my cow pasture boots on and could not get up any higher without eatin *****), and alas, two dogs were waiting on him with wagging tails! This truly is a Christmas miracle! They were a little cold and tired but are happy to be home. The fact that these two dogs survived below freezing temps and the threat of coyotes and mountain lions for three nights is incredible! Good stuff

Fantastic! A most wonderful ending to a sad tale. I've followed this story from afar since you started the thread. Kept thinking about those dogs. Glad to hear a happy ending.

Fantastic news, The Kurgan.

Isn't it amazing how animals are able to adapt and survive?
