Biltmore, Arcadia area, North Phoenix, Pardise Valley and Scottsdale are nice areas. These areas cost more, but with the economy doing so poorly, there might be some good deals out there...

Ares to avoid in my personal opinion.

Avondale, Glendale, Surprise, Peoria, Mesa

Places that are clean and a good quality of life.

Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale, S. Tempe, Cave Creek

Decent up and coming place that is a STEAL for real estate: QUEEN CREEK

We found it valuable to make several trips and see the different areas before we purchased a home here. We chose to live in North Peoria and find the city to be very clean and low in crime. You will find areas in each community that could be termed dicey. We live in Vistancia and the community was voted the best master planned community several years in a row. We have two new elementary schools in the middle of the various neighborhoods. Many builders to choose from with some still offering new builds. There are foreclosures here like many other areas and the prices are great. You realy should take a trip and decide for yourself. These forums are valuable, but we all have our preferences and our bias.

Do It! Overcome your fear and do it! I moved to Kingman last November, lost my job and now in Tucson. At times it seems a little scary being in a new place but if you just hang in there, it'll work out.
I am currently visiting the east coast right now and can't wait to get back to Arizona! The weather here is humid, wet, no sun, etc....the biggest reason I moved!

Default Phoenix recommendations

Honestly, every area within Phoenix has bad spots and good spots- even Scottsdale has its good and bad, and it's known for being more pricy, etc. Your best bet is to ask a few Real estate agents to help you find good neighborhoods. You need more of an answer than 5 minutes typing can provide.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy Phoenix!
