Thanks. Do you think that there are places withing a 30 minute drive of the airport that we could afford? My daughter's theory is this: right now she is earning about $15,000 per year. This new job will start her at $26,000. She said she's the poor person now and doesn't want to go someplace where she'll be in the same boat. She's trying to advance her life. Also, we wouldn't be willing to accept mobile homes. Right now she has a mobile on private land.
thanks for everything.

Under those circumstances, can your daughter make Dallas one of her choices? Dallas and Houston are actually cheaper than Little Rock (I live near Little Rock). Your $125k budget will, however, work well in Little Rock, and it has the advantage of being small enough that getting around town is not such a burden (as in the huge cities).
Me, I'm trying to get AWAY from fundamentalist Christians; if you are a fundamentalist Christian, believe me, you'll fit in well here.
The crime statistics apply primarily to the part of town south of IH 630. North of that freeway, crime is no better or worse than any other city. South, it is worse.
My primary reason for being on this board is to try and find someplace to move that will be better for my asthma and allergies. I'm having a tough time breathing at this point and am thinking the desert (no pollen? no trees? no mold?) sounds like the ticket.

allergies in the desert
Hi Malvie,
I live in Tucson and oddly enough, people complain about allergies here. They are due mostly to the dust but there are some days when high pollen counts are mentioned on the news. We have a lot of trees, just not the kind found in moderate climates. I guess you just can't win, but I personally suffer less congestion than I did in the southeast.

I have lived in the desert for 20 years. We have pollen, trees and mold. This has been the worst year for mold in the entire 20 years. Don't take my word for it; check with the University Medical Center in Tucson for info.
"Dry western states at risk for mold, study finds.
July 21, 2006—Contrary to popular belief, climate is not a good gauge for mold risk, according to a ranking of states at risk for mold contamination on commercial and residential property. Areas with dry climates like Nevada and Arizona made it to the top ten."

Let me tell you she will be the poor person here again. You don't want to move to a bad area here and be poor at the same time. It might not be the best move under those circumstances. Housing is too expensive here now.
Is renting out of the question?

Well, because of a misunderstanding, she is not on the Phoenix list for the time being. Renting isn't out of the question, just doesn't seem to make financial sense.
thanks

I'd steer clear of Phoenix and it's 'burbs. Too much traffic 'n the usual hassles of 'Big City'. Tucson/Marana are bad enough. However... if ya gotta live in the PHX area... check out Mesa.

Thanks everyone. You've given me lots to look at. She can put in for Phoenix after 90 days training if she wants to move.
