Our family is planning to move to AZ, but need information on special need services for young adults. Our daughter lives with us, but likes to go to a gym, but needs an inclusion assistant. In a few years she will need to transition to a residential group home. We're thinking Chandler, Flagstaff, Sedona--but don't know anything about the DMR services. How is Arizona in general for services?

Your better off in Chandler because you are in Phoenix and services that you require are harder to find in smaller cites.

AZ services are 100 x better than those in Florida but not good compared to some other cities, where are you moving from?

We are moving from Northern Illinois, 35 miles from Chicago, near Lake MI.
School services were good, but IL ranks 48th in nation for services for adults with special needs. |

One thing you can do is to request a copy of the "Survey of State Developmental Services Systems." Arizona is around page 27 in the book. You will find topics such as "Organizations for the DD population, the populations served, and community service delivery system. Also go through an organization called Protection and Advocacy try (PAI.com), and the Arizona Department of Social Services.

Thanks Charlie Brown,
Did you get this book from David Braddock PhD, Colorado? Do you have a family member who uses services, or do you work for the agencies? Greenerpastures Quote:

I am an advocate for the developmentally disabled in California. I have a 33 year old Autistic son, and have been a special education teacher. The book should be available at: Association of Regional Center Agencies, 910 K Street Mall, Ste. 300, Sacramento, CA. 95814. Also for disabled rights problems try:Protection and Advocacy Inc. - Home Page, this is Protection and Advocacy, Inc. They are based in California, but can provide a wealth of information. They also work for free for the disabled depending on ability to pay. Your daughter's pay not yours. Keep in touch if you need more help.
