Default Any good hunting in AZ???

I am debating on moving out to northern arizona, looking into Prescott valley area from michigan, but I am just curious what types of hunts are available. I have gotten a record cougar out of your great state and know that Flagstaff has one of the largest elk populations around, what about Turkeys, deer, bird hunting, etc. Thanks for the information! Any info for a young professional looking to move to northern arizona, please feel free with that info also! Thanks.

This place is getting VERY liberal. They DO NOT take kindly to hunting. It used to be pro-hunting but all the SoCals are changing the policies out here. Also, this area is a DESERT. Only in the pines will you find animals to hunt but out here it is a lottery. Hunting permits are issued based on a lottery. So it is a waiting game.

Remember, Prescott & PV were founded by the RICH and RETIRED SoCals. They moved here and bought-up cheap land and got 100x more bang for the buck than they did is SoCal. Out here the former cattle ranch land owners sold millions $$$ of dollars of land to the people moving here. THEY control the politicians and everything out here.

NOW, the SoCal people that moved here in the 80s and 90s HATE the growth. They believe it is turning into another large metro-city. They OPPOSE the new people and REALLY hate the growth. Out here EVERYTHING that has to do with growth is countered by the SoCal people with lawyers. You want to expand the roads? Well, they will sue the developers to STOP the expansion.

DO yourself a favor and MOVE to a larger town with a more friendly and progressive approach. Here, everything is backwards and anti-progress. I can't wait to get the he*^ out of here!!!!

There are MORE negatives than positives. IF you are RICH, then Prescott will work for you, IF you need to WORK, then DO NOT MOVE HERE. The pay is a joke. There are no jobs that pay well. Remember, this town is still a "small town". The opportunities are VERY limited. Housing is priced HIGH .

There are opportunities to hunt all types of game, but some of them are limited. You have to be drawn for big game, you can't buy a deer tag over the counter like you can back east.

There are plenty of coyotes to shoot, though.

KBrusveen - There is some truth to what Pettrix said about Prescott Valley, but overall Arizona is still a pro-gun and pro-hunting state. We have white-tail, and black-tail deer, and good elk, as well as sheep, javalina (wild boar), turkey and a variety of birds, including plenty of dove, and quail.

with antelered game and javalina, we do have drawings in Arizona, but if you put in early, you'll have a good chance of getting drawn.

Mike,

I have a friend in Show Low who is big into hunting. He's been there 30 years and in that time has only been drawn for Elk THREE TIMES!! Is that fairly typical out there?

I would say yes, and it doesn't surprise me because it's tougher to get drawn for elk than white or blacktail.

I hunted when I first came here, but gave it up. There a lot of different game, but hardly any numbers. Success ratio has to be very low. And there is definitely no "deer camp" culture here like when I was a kid in the U.P.

LOL ... I have a friend of mine who's originally from Kalamazoo, and she tells me you probably have a better chance of killing deer with your car than your rifle while driving through the U.P...

....'specially if "deer camp" is really a euphamism among you and your friends for "eating and drinking way too much and looking at ugly bar chix...."

I got a deer on Molokai, Hawaii with a brand new Mustang convertible rental car.....on my Honeymoon....Never hit one in MI, but seen lots....I live about 10 minutes outside Detroit and get them in my backyard all the time. They eat my flowers......Also, just missed about a half-dozen huge elk crossing 60, just east of Show Low last time I was there...They scared the hell out of me...
