thanks everyone for the great suggestions - i googled the Church of the Holy Cross and wow - how gorgeous - definitely a must see in my book!
How does one pronounce Tlaquepaque? Is it Tuh-lak-pak? There's a town in NJ called Wanaque, but you don't pronounce it "Wah-nah-ck", it's "Wan-ah-cue", hence my question. Thanks! |

Beleive its pronounced Ta-la-paw-ki. You can also Google it to find out more about it and it's origins.

In response to the 3 posters above-- I know you are trying to be helpful, but you guys are all wrong; nobody actually says it that way. If you want to sound like a true 'zonie, it's "te-lack-uh-PACK-ee." It rhymes with "I'll sack your khaki"!!!
Oh yeah, and one suggestion-- if you're going to Sedona in the summer, and plan on spending time outdoors, hiking, walking around for a long time or whatever, do that either really early in the morning (before 9:30) or late afternoon (5:00 or after). The sun there is intense; Sedona is not much cooler than Phoenix. The big difference though, is it will cool down comfortably at night, unlike PHX. |

Hee, hee, Isn't it fun the way we anglos can butcher a Spanish word. I talked to my Zonie sister in VOC and she says it;s 'Ta-la-kee-pa ke". My Hispanic neighbors proficient in Spanish), born in CA and TX both pronounced it differently when I asked them separately so they couldn't hear each other.
So around we go on proper pronounciation (It's fun). There is a thread in another forum on pronounciation of AZ place names and it gets pretty interesting. So, tahiti and Stumbilina, just come on out and have fun. |

![]() Sedona's elevation is about 4,000 feet ASL, but about 10 miles north of the center of town, if you drive on highway 89A, it climbs up to the top of Oak Creek Canyon, to about 6,700 feet. There's a scenic observation point at the top. If you continue north on 89A, you'll end up in Flagstaff about 18 miles north of the observation point. |
