WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexico border, officials said Tuesday, pre-empting Republican plans to try to force votes on such a deployment.

My Way News - Obama to send 1,200 troops to US-Mexico border

Never would have happened if not for SB1070.

1200 National Guard troops for the entire US-Mexico border? Any military strategist would tell you that number is nowhere enough. Perhaps for any ONE state it would be a start. 12,000 would have been more correct, but seriously still not enough.

The US government apparently doesn't want to amass a great number of troops at the border for fear of either startling or "alienating" Mexico. Also, National Guard troops wouldn't send the same message that the United States regular Army would.

It appears that McCain and others told him at their meeting today that they would not be willing to help him with immigration reform until the border was secure.

Since Obama wants reform he is sending a token number of NG troops to the border. McCain has already spoken out that this number is too small and at least 6,000 are needed.

Now we wait for the rest of the story.

You could do it with 12 troops. You'd just have to give them shoot-to-kill ROE and the problem would shrink exponentially overnight. 120,000 troops with no ammo or no authority to do anything won't even make a dent in the problem.

AMEN, Rick . . .

This is just more Obama Political Spin BS. Sending 1200 "unarmed observers" will do about a much good as a troop of Girl Scouts.

That's like going to a Chinese restaurant and getting 1 grain of rice on a huge serving platter.
Washington is conviced that we are all dumb rednecks. I don't buy it!

They don't intend to secure the border.

"The National Guard troops will work on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis and training, and support efforts to block drug trafficking. They will temporarily supplement border patrol agents until Customs and Border Protection can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border, an administration official said."

Strategically-placed snipers would do a much better job.
