CADDO GAP, Ark. — Flash floods swamped campgrounds along a pair of southwestern Arkansas rivers early Friday, killing 16 and leaving anguished families pleading with emergency workers for help in finding dozens of missing people.

The Associated Press: Police say 16 dead, dozens missing in Ark. floods

Flash flood indeed. Very sad.

I've been watching this news story all day. They are saying that the rivers rose sometimes as fast as eight feet an hour. I just can't imagine. My heart goes out to the families there, and to the rescue workers who are doing everything they can to find the missing.

So, so sad. They said the death toll just went up to 20. I've been there so many times.

My heart goes out to the families. I had an accident in May and will be disabled for a couple of months. But when I see stories like this, I'm grateful for being alive. Every day is a blessing.

This is why we must learn to separate political chatter from real human issues and bond together as one people. Unity will only make us stronger.

I know that country well, having spent many, many days in those valleys doing archeology work for the Ouachita National Forest. Albert Pike is one of the most popular recreation areas on the ONF and it's highest elevation is only about 10 feet above "normal" water level, and upstream they are only a couple feet above. On up-stream from there are several unauthorized camping areas in a narrow "V" shaped valley with only the Little Missouri River and a single track ONF road in the bottom. There is no way anyone could have survived there because there is even less way out. So sad.

I anticipate that the ONF will be "jumped on" for "letting" campers use that low area of Albert Pike.

I camped on the Illinois River a few years ago - when we woke up, our riverside campsite has morphed into a river island campsite. It is something that most people don't consider when setting up on that beautiful spot next to the river - and you rarely think about the road getting flooded.

I too visit the area often and am praying for the families who have lost loved ones and are searching for missing loved ones.

I just saw this on the news. One river rose 20 feet in 4 hours. The people were just starting their vacations. The flood hit at night. SAD.
