Question First Trip to Arkansas

I will be making my first trip to Arkansas in August to meet my boyfriends' family. He has family in Malvern, Texarkana, Conway, Hope, and Hot Springs. I don't really know much about Arkansas or the areas stated for that matter. What kind of things does Arkansas have to offer? Thanks A Lot!!

There are lots of activities, especially if you like the outdoors. Of course there are the usual nice bars, some decent restaurants, and Hot Springs has some great baths and spas. If you like the outdoors there are too many things to do to even list. Oh, one more fun thing in Hot Springs is taking the DUCK. It will take you around town and then onto the lake and back.

Of course the Clinton Library is in AR which is something else you may want to visit.

Both Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee were born in Hope, Ar.

Don't know where you're coming from but, Arkansas has two seasons: summer and deer season. There's outdoors stuff to do if you can take the heat.
Those places you mentioned are sleepy small towns. Hot Springs is somewhat touristy. It's neat to see some of the historical spas. Apparently, it was a posh kind of place at one time.

We're glad you're coming to visit! Malvern is a small town- I stayed there once when hotels were booked in Hot Springs, but there's a lot of natural beauty in that area. Lake Catherine State Park and DeGray Lake are in that area and are absolutely beautiful. Hot Springs is a lovely city, quite touristy, but a great place to visit. The historic "bathhouse row" is worth a visit, and there are some great restaurants and bars in that area. Oaklawn race course is the only place in Arkansas that has any legalized form of gambling, and it's a popular Hot Springs destination. There's also a pretty nice looking amusement park there called Magic Springs that was redeveloped and reopened recently. Hope is a relatively small city, but other than being the birthplace of prominent Arkansas politicians, I don't know much about it. Texarkana and Conway are both relatively nice small cities. Texarkana has some amazing history and a lot of faded glory in it's downtown area, but it's worth looking around a bit. Conway is a pretty spread out small city, home to three colleges (two significant ones- Hendrix College and the University of Central Arkansas), but pretty generic. It is close to Little Rock though, and there's a lot to do there. The River Market district has some great restaurants and bars and there are some nice touristy/history things in that area to browse through. There's also the presidential library, an old submarine and riverboat, Heifer International's headquarters, the Arkansas Arts Center, and pretty good shopping. There's no shortage of parks, lakes, rivers, and outdoor activities in Arkansas, and if you're around central Arkansas or Northwest Arkansas, there are some nice cities with shopping, nightlife, music, and great food.

It's a beautiful state with lots to do, indoors and out! The different regions of the state are also very different, even going from Texarkana to Hot Springs you'll see what I mean.

We lived in Malvern for 40+ years before moving to Little Rock six years ago. If circumstances permitted, we would still be living there. We lived about two miles south of town, in the country, and sure miss it. It is a small town (about 10,000 Pop) with a little bit of everything and near lots of recreation areas. The big thing now is canoeing and kyacking (however it is spelled) on the Ouachita River. It is close enough to Hot Springs to take an evening run for other stuff. Enjoy your trip and may your meetings be positive

We sure don't have much canoeing in Northern Illinois, but I am pretty much down for anything and I love nature. Malvern seems like it'll be a pretty nice little town thanks for the info!

Lake Catherine (between Hot Springs and Malvern) has row boats, canoes, etc. You can get on one and row to spot where you can get out and walk over to a really pretty waterfall with a waterhole at the bottom. It is very nice.
