I've lived in Northern California, Colorado, and Arkansas and I just became a senior in high school. Spending most of my high school years in Cabot and going to school in Little Rock, I have to say that the place is completely backwards. I'm a conservative, so don't go callin me a liberal or anything, but California is just SO much better. I know it probably offends a lot of people and they do their research to bring up California's flaws, but they've never actually lived there. They've been in Arkansas their whole life and know nothing else. Now I don't know much about the Fayetteville area, but I do hear it's hella better than Little Rock. There's just nothing to do! I was sooooo bored, out of my mind. There was absolutely no where to hang out, besides maybe Sonic (which is looked down on in scorn in Colorado, since it is such low-end stuff), there's no Jamba Juice, no awesome amusement parks, no mountains, no beach, no cool places to go in the city (the Riverwalk gets old fast). Not to mention there are bugs everywhere, and these strange things called "dry counties" which limit an area so much when it comes to cool restaurants and music. I hate the music scene here even in Little Rock, and maybe like 2 cool modern rock bands come a year, if even that. All the years I was trapped there I dreamed of moving back to Colorado, with it's breathtaking mountains, or San Francisco with it's exciting and inspiring atmosphere. Thank God, I moved back to Denver earlier this year, and it really does kick ass. One thing I noticed was how in-shape everyone was. People just don't work out in Arkansas nearly as much as they do here. The number of bikers (not motorcycles, but actual bicycles) is crazy, and it's kinda funny the way they get all dressed up in the spandex biker outfits, but you know what, the girls are just that much hotter. I maybe saw two bikers my whole time in Little Rock, and everyone else just did it cause they were too young to drive. And you know what... it's awesome. Here in Colorado high school football isn't the highlight of your life, and the only time you work out. So I'm just saying, before go all crazy defending Arkansas, just realize that maybe the goods don't outweigh the bads: maybe you've just never known anything better...

I agree with the above. I have lived in Arkansas my whole life so you know it is not biased. As a smart individual who isnt influenced easily, I will tell you the straight facts on typical Arkansas life.

It doesnt cost less to live here. reality, cheaper, of course, even considering the poor quality of the land and carpentry. But when you see things advertised on tv (food, cell phone plans, car parts) your paying the same price as the pizza boy in california making 12 bucks an hour, when u are making near minimum wage.and you have to order everything from out of state, since there are no places to shop within driving distance of 90% of Arkansas.

NowI'm not singling Arkansas out, or speaking for all of it with any of this. but there are no real cities in arkansas. Wouldnt it be nice to have one within a days trip away? There is if you live near the border...

People inArkansas,in general, have no interest in anything. Even the 'outdoorsmen' really dont know much about what they do, and arent as into it as youd think, just by chance that they live down a dirt road.. Next time youre in AR, check and see how many people youy even see outside of a car or building... Labor is very expensive here, since no one has interest in learning skills or trades, yet people like to brag about some weird things.

The social scenes are very 'clanish' or 'clickish', its very hard to meet people here, unles you are a senior, I dont see how anyone could consider Arkansas a friendly state compaired to California, I dont feel comfortable saying hi or talking to people here that I dont know.it usualy creeps them out. Alot of people try to compare convienient store workers, well out here thats a job to be proud of,in other states why should they be nice, they hate there day at work, and arent getting paid extra to be nice. There is town rivalry that has nothing to do with highschool or sports..

Its not a quiet, care free place to live.To tell you the truth, I would rather have someone steal my car once a year than have it vandalized once a week. I would rather have a knife pulled on me, so I could claim self defense, rather than have someone verbally threaten over and over me until I'm so angry I attack them first, and end up in jail. I'd rather have admitted pot users living down the street, than closet meth users/makers living next door trying to keep it a secret.

The school systems I have seen are horrible. Not the education itself, but the structuring, etc. this is the least religious place i have ever seen.Lots of churches and no REAL religion.i wont get into that too much..lets just say its sad

Nothing happens here, people are oblivious to old technology and make a big spectacle out of things that are every day in most places. The bugs are horrible, the humidity isnt fun either. racist is a style, just like emo, gangster, etc

Now before you get all too mad, I'll let you know that there a big misconception that there arent places like this is every single part of the country. there is. heck California has more redneck/smalltown areas than arkansas does, but its not stacked on top of each other like a dirty pile of laundry, like it is here in Arkansas. Youy may be one of those goobers that says if you dont like it, why dont you move!?! well i didnt say i didnt like it. I like sittin back and watcing people waste there lives and being in total subconcious denial about it. theres good and bad about every place.I've found somthing here that makes me happy... But tell me again what good outweighs the bad here that no other place has? there are secluded mountains, sand dunes, lakes and woodlands just miles from major cities in California, everything else arkansas had, other states have better upkept, more official, high quality versions of it. Anyone who wants to argue that point I'm always open minded, but I know im right wether i convince u of it or not.

Andrew we have only lived here 2 months, but the AR you live in must be different from the state we just moved to, living in 4 different locations in the USA, I can say, we are just sorry we didn't find AR sooner. construction crappy, well I can assure you our home here is built a heck of a lot better than our house in NM was built. Cost of living, it is lower here, sure salaries might be lower as well, but many things are much cheaper. Some, similar and maybe a few higher. One example: dentist here: $75 to get our teeth cleaned, NM, $140, dog gromming: $25 here, $35 in NM, boarding our dog here, $20 per day, NM $30-$40. I could go on and on. Unless you have actually lived in other places, you are not a good judge....property taxes alone can save many $1000s a year.

But, even if this wasn't the case, I can look out my back door and see wildlife, I can watch the birds and watch the trees blowing in the wind: humidity is high, but have you spent much time in Dallas or Houston during the summer? We love our rural setting and yet, are only 20 minutes entertainment, good food, shopping and a good hospital.

People are friendly, if you don't want to say "hi Neighbor" you have a problem, not Arkansas.....

Nita

Anyone who thinks there is no difference in cost of living between California and Arkansas is a buffoon. I know a dozen who relocated here and live in 4500 SF mini-mansions when they were struggling to live in a 1200 SF ranch there. That's why HSV and Bella Vista are full of CA retirees.

From what I'm reading I can't wait to get to AR. I've paid taxes (some $12 a year) on a piece of dirt up in Fulton County so maybe I need to come on up soon. Seems to me that I will fit right in way out in the back woods. Any hoot I don't give a hoot about them big cities. I'm in love with the big lakes and the big fish in 'em though. Make room for me and the Mrs. ya'll.
