Since you will be travelling to the coast, you MUST take prophylactic treatment for malaria two weeks before leaving home. Consult your doctor to find out which tablet to take, mostly they are only available on prescription. Carry long-sleeved tops/shirts and trousers for evenings, sleep under net wherever possible and use mosquito repellent.

Wouldn't that greatly depend upon which coast one wishes to travel ? You certainly would not need such innoculations to visit the Crystal Coast of N. Carolina, nor Virginia, not even S. Carolina or Florida. Also, there is nothing that prevents Malaria, Quinine (tonic water will do) just suppresses the symptoms, but, it is the symptoms that will kill you. I do not believe there is Malarial infection on any of the United States coasts, but.....if you really want to catch a case of it (there is no cure for malaria either) why not head to the coast of Central West Africa, there are all sorts of interesting maladies lurking in those parts of the world.

I agree Dusty. I'm not aware of any place in the U.S. which still has malaria. I got mine in Korea in 1951 and it took a year for it to present itself. I, and several of my fellow soldiers almost died from it. It's rough! After spending a month in the VA at Little Rock it was gotten under control and was dormant for another five years before it presented again. Thankfully, nothing since then.
