Smile Elk in Arkansas....

I have done some research and have read about elk in the northern parts of the state....I understand there is a controlled herd in one of the state parks. I am excited about the possibility of seeing this beautiful animal in the wild in its natural habitat..............can anyone reading this verify ever seeing this animal roaming in its natural environment and just how rare it is to see one???

I rounded the corner in a canoe on the Buffalo River back in the nineties and saw a herd of Elk cross the river right in front of me. It's been a while but if I remember correctly there were at least 5-7 of them.

Yes, I've seen them plenty. They are mostly in Newton County, around Buffalo River National Park, though I'm sure they wander out of their territory. Years ago I was taking an early morning stroll near Steele Creek Campground (on the Buffalo) and came upon a full grown elk nibbling on some tree leaves. What a HUGE animal up close--for a split second my mind was thinking it must be a moose, it was so huge. Later that same stroll I came upon a baby and some adults. They were a native animal once upon a time in the Ozarks and reintroduced about 30 years ago (?). They've had some disease over the years but I think they're thriving now. I want to say the herd is about 200 in count but don't quote me on that. Rhere are 2 limited hunting seasons in Sept. and Dec. If you do search on Yahoo titled See The Elk and click the first sight you'll find lots of info, popular viewing sights, etc. They are majestic.

The Elk are here and by the abundance. Check out the Boxley and the Ponca area the Upper Buffalo River area is where they are seen regularly. Last week-end of June, in Jasper Arkansas. The Elk Festival hosted by the Chamber and local Forestry has great information on the Elk in our area along with drawing for permits to hunt for Elk.

Elk really are beautiful aren't they?
Don't quote me on this but when I was up on Mt. Sequoyah (Fayetteville) I saw some but then again it could have just been deer...it was sooo dark!
I see all sorts up there though I saw a family of fox once too.
It makes me sad when everyone hunts them down just for trophy...they are so timid and sweet...so sad.
