Census: Majority of town is Hispanic

By: Eric Nicholson - Texarkana Gazette -Published: 02/19/2011

DE QUEEN, Ark.—Around lunchtime, the smell of cumin and sizzling meat wafts over Sevier County’s courthouse square from a corner taqueria.

A pair of piñatas flank the doors of a nearby storefront. In another, the windows are adorned with the glittering pastel quinceñera gifts. Signs in the windows of other businesses announce “Se habla espanol,” or, Spanish is spoken here.

It wasn’t like this even 15 years ago, but an influx of Hispanics in the past two decades has transformed the economic and cultural fabric of De Queen.

Wow! Are there any other towns in Arkansas that are majority Hispanic?

I can't remember ever being to De Queen but it doesn't really surprise or bother me.

Doesn't bother me either. Just thought this was an interesting article. I think De Queen is the only majority Hispanic town in Arkansas.

I doubt it.

I imagine that Springdale is pretty close to being a Hispanic majority.

As of 2006, Springdale was only 20% Hispanic. Admittedly, that almost definitely doesn't include illegal immigrants that may be there, but I doubt it's anywhere near a Hispanic majority just 4 years later. It is interesting how quickly De Queen's demographics have shifted, apparently it has been an appealing location for a Hispanic community to thrive.

It's ok if they're illegal. I'm so happy they are in this country and are contributing.

The city-data info shows 35.8%. It doesn't give a year for the info though.

Hmm, maybe that chunk of the population did grow a lot since 06 then (the 06 data is from the Census's website), or maybe it was just more accurately reported for the full census, I know they put quite a bit of effort into getting people (legal or otherwise) to turn in their forms.

Whites are still the majority in Springdale. The info I posted from The Texarkana Gazette is misleading because they claim hispanics make up more than half of De Queen's population of 6,000 at 53%. Now I went to this site, Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is against the tos , and they are saying hispanics make up 38.6%. I'm like which one is correct? According to the link, the info they have is census info but the Texarkana Gazette article claimed the same thing so I'm confused. Here is an interesting article about the hispanic population growth in Springdale. http://www.5newsonline.com/news/kfsm-news-nwa-population-growth-springdale,0,3192258.story (broken link)
