The only place I ever found a Garden of Eden was a restaurant in Tulsa. I lived in NEOK which was a stones throw from NWA. I probably spent more time there than I did at home. I still have friends is places like Gravette and Tontitown and Fayetteville. It is the only place I would consider living twice!

These surveys are often misleading to the casual reader. Bankrate just published a really stupid one, that showed that the '10 worst states to retire' were all Southern states - but not high tax high crime states.

One of the primary criteria appeared to be '% of retirees in poverty'. If you're poor, you're going to be poor wherever you live. Wouldn't it make sense to move someplace your money goes further?

Does anybody really move to Michigan to retire? Makes me wonder what is really behind these things. "the South is a horrible place to retire" (sponsored by the Yankee Coalition).

Doesn't it make you think when you see something like the south is a horrible place to retire, sponsored by the Yankee Coalition? That would be like saying 95% of the people living in New England are snobs, sponsored by the "life is better in the south coalition"

I have always said, these studies have to be taken with a grain of salt. Think about how many studies have put Bella Vista in the top 10 places to retire, followed a month later by a study showing NWA lacks medical and entertainment facilities...Slightly off subect, but just to prove a point: look at how far down our country is when it comes to education; what most never take into consideration: many of the top countries do not even require kids to go to school, so those in school, especially high school are there because they have a choice..They are attending high school in order to further their education, not because it is required they attend until a certain age. The rural families in many of these countries never even start school.

My cousins in Dardenelle and on into the river bottom area delighted in having city people from other states visit. Said visitors seemed to think the cousins were too countrified to be very intelligent, especially, the way they spoke almost surely proved it. The city dudes seldom went home without leaving more than they intended in Arkansas. From what I heard, my kin were good at side-bets. Checkers isn't necessarily for children. In my uncle's store there was always a game in progress and visitors were welcome to give it a go.

Here is another interesting look at health rankings. Miserable depends on ones own situation, they over do these polls as fillers it seems. I get tired of them as well.

States can't be miserable or happy - only people can be.
