Default Spudnuts: A South Arkansas Breakfast Ledgend

I have been reading with great interest the comments about the Spudnut
Shop in El Dorado. Once you have tasted a spudnut you never forget how good they are. A history of the shop can be found on the South Arkansas Historical Journal website.

Default Spudnut Shop has been sold

News flash, just returned from a visit to El Dorado, my father told me that Will Varnell has sold the Spudnut Shop to a Hispanic couple that worked there for him.

You can now get jalapeno spudnuts (just kidding). I went by there this past Monday for a dozen and they are still good as ever.

EHS class of '58 enjoyed cokes and hamburgers as well as spudnuts from the Stringfellows' Spudnut Shop when we attended junior high school. Our 50th reunion is in Oct.

Hey, was browsing through your threads, as I never really hear anything about Arkansas except your stereotypical comment. I ran across the Spudnut donut story. There was one of those in my hometown. I grew up in Northwestern New Mexico. It closed about....maybe 10 years ago but they were the best
!

Default Spudnuts

I got beat to saying that Mr. Varnell just sold it. My Wife's Grandpa worked there for years and years until he passed away. I actually went there this morning. Here's a secret to them that my wife's grandpa taught me, if you ever get them and don't eat them right out of the store and they get cold, cut them in half, put them in the oven under the broiler for a minute or so and then butter them. Yummy.

Default Death of a spudnut

Alas, the spudnut in El Dorado is no longer. I was there for a Christmas visit and went to the Spudnut Shop last Friday morning for a dozen, anticipating that wonderful, warm, spudnut taste. When I got back to the house, I first noticed that they did not look right and they were not warm. My first bite was a total letdown, I had bitten into a doughnut. I don't know what the new owners have done, but they ain't the same. A legend is gone.

I guess on my next visit I'll have to take a trip to Magnolia to see if theirs are still the same. RIP Mr. Spudnut, you were great while you lasted.
