Default Clarksville

Clarksville is a very nice, but small town. Cost of living is great. I met many wonderful people during my 4 year stay in Clarksville, many of whom I have stayed in touch with. If you are young and single, looking for a social life, it may be a bit difficult in Clarksville. Little Rock is 100 miles and Ft Smith about 60 miles. If you are looking to settle down and raise a family, Clarksville would be a good choice if you are ok with small towns. I often regret leaving Clarksville. I currently live in Las Vegas, NV and will be returning to Arkansas in the next month or so.

Default Nice Place

I spent three weeks in Lamar, Clarksville, and Hartman. I really liked it there. It was different from what I am used to considering I was visiting family from a larger city. The scenery is very nice, and at least they don't have traffic. I was actually surprised when I was there. Everyone says Arkansas is full of hillbillies. I never encountered anyone that was backwards or strange. The only thing I didn't like is that it always smells of chicken ****. They use it as fertilizer.

One quick note. Our family went out to celebrate a birthday, and we ate a a restaurant named Porkey's. It's located in the real small town of Scranton. REAL good food!!!

I thought Little Rock was nice too

Clarksville is not bad during normal times, but go to Wal-Mart during the middle of the day during weekends, especially on abnormal days. You'll see some stuff you only thought existed in movies.

I moved from CA to clarksville a couple years ago. It a culture shock - which if you have the right mindset can be overcome quite easily. I have two little kids and I thought that it would be a nice place. NOT in my oppinion. I lasted there 3 months before I got myself and my kids out of there. Personal opinion here, so no one take this wrong, but I swear that town in corrupt! Between the cops and the church there's no winning. Now don't get me wrong I have nothing against Church, in fact I try to go as often as I can, but when I was there I stopped going to church altogether.

Okay I don't really want to bash it, but I did not have a good experience there. And there are a lot of good ol' boys, some of them really are, and some of them. . . I don't know what they were. It's a dry town, so if you like alcohol you better be ready to DRIVE (about 30 min) before you find anything.
And you do have to watch out for the surrounding towns. Personally I thought Scranton (one of the alcohol places) was the worst. Nice to drive through, but there are some roughnecks there.
Clarksville is beautiful though. That was the hardest to leave was the beauty. Some nice lakes closeby, the mountains on the outskirts make a wonderful drive.
Personally I think that it is a great town - for older people. They don't seem to get messed with. For younger people though if you end up moving there be careful of who you meet. They can make you think they're nice when they aren't.

LOL. Daniel, glad you enjoyed your stay, but FYI, the chicken litter is only applied in spring and early summer, so that smell fades

I have lived and worked all over North America, and I'll soon be moving back to Clarksville.

My girlfriend and her daughters can rarely be found at home, especially at this time of year. School, softball and jeeping their way to local swimming holes tucked in among the gorgeous mountains makes 'em hard to find.

I'm looking forward to moving my street/trail bike there so I can be running the hundreds of miles of logging trails.

Also, Clarksville is one of the few towns in the south that still has solvent businesses right on the town square. Get your prescriptions filled, shop for gifts and get yourself a gourmet sammich (with bean sprouts no less) right on the town square.

True, if you want an adult beverage, you'll have to ease over to Altus or Scranton (Porky's is still owned by the family of Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean, Major league hall-of-famer) but some of us actually like it that way.

Your drive to and from the watering hole will take less time than heading downtown in any large city. Just do as the Good captain Morgan sez, and "drink responsibly".

And kayaking, mountain biking, dirtbiking, hiking, golf, tennis, soccer, softball, etc, etc. True, you may have to do these things in the presence of those awful, nasty redneck people.

But maybe if you're quiet, they won't hurt you.

When I lived in Clarksville in the late 70's, I found it to be a dirty old town in a beautiful part of the country. Chock-full of the biggest hypocrites I've ever met, its in a "dry" county and had without a doubt more alcoholics-and drug addicts- per capita than anywhere I have lived. The "conservatives" claimed they didn't want evil alcohol in THEIR town, but would regularly flood across the county line to buy as much as the law will allow, pop open a 6-pack and drive home! What a waste of scenery! Went back about 5 years ago, nothing had changed!! I'd head for Hot Springs and never look back!
