I, too, hope John is finally on the right track. Not because I care at all about golf, but because you hate for a guy to never get his act together.

I'm sure you remember Tanya Harding? She never has figured anything out, and Oregon as a state has completely disowned her because she is an embarrassment. She is nothing but a joke in her home state, and even an ice rink at a local mall was renamed after all her misdeeds. She continues to baffle.

I think people in Arkansas are rooting for him because he is U of Arkansas product; it really has nothing to do with race. Verplank (sp?) is from Oklahoma (Ok State Alum) and I'm sure if you did a poll of Verplank versus Tiger (for Oklahoma) you'd probably get about the same results, in favor of Verplank. Myself, I'm rooting for Tiger because I'd like to see him win there, but if Verplank won I'd be happy as well.

John Daly was born in California but moved to Dardnelle, AR. when he was a young boy - Big John played for the University of Arkansas golf team and is still a big supporter of U of A athletics. John is in NWA regularly and is a common figure seen on the sidelines at home Razorback football games. John also hosts a homecoming party in Fayetteville each year on that weekend and usually brings in his buddies - Hootie and the Blowfish as entertainment.

The state of Arkansas is supporting Big John in this ESPN pole because John is so closely associated with the state. Just like Synopsis said - Scott Verplank played at OSU and I am sure that if the pole was him versus Tiger, Oklahoma would be the only state with majority vote for Verplank. I personally wouldn't be interested in golf if it wasn’t for Tiger Woods. I think he has been great for the sport of golf.

Geez, does everything always have to be about race? Daly went to the University of Arkansas!! Duh! I am from Florida and live here and all I ever hear about is John Daly. Come on now. Not everything is about race unless you allow it to be or are looking for reason for it to be.
