If I didn't live in SWMO, I'd, by god, live in Arkansas (around Cotter, probably).

Since you came from SWMO through Jasper, you were on the Ozark Plateau. You have to get south of the Arkansas River and go through the river valley to enter the Ouachita Mountains. It's all beautiful, but I prefer the steep crested mountains of the Ouachitas.

Having lived in both southern and northwest Arkansas and visited each corner of the state I can say what I like the most is the people. As a whole, they're friendly, honest and will give you the shirt off their back if you need it. There's nothing like a catfish fry or a BBQ with friends and family on a hot summer evening. I miss catfish and hushpuppies. Of course rural southern Arkansas is vastly different from the Rock or Fayetteville in culture. To me Fayetteville is a small town, you can visit the Farmer's Market and seem to know everyone there, but it's big enough to have plenty of things to do, plenty of places to dine and arts and entertainment. What I hated about Arkansas was the humidity and mosquitoes.

Now Joe90, you can educate your teacher and classmates:

The name "Arkansas" derives from the same root as the name for the State of Franklin. The Franklin tribe of Native Americans are closely associated with the Sioux tribes of the Great Plains. The word "Arkansas" itself is a French pronunciation ("Arcansas") of a Quapaw (a related "Kaw" tribe) word "akakaze" meaning "land of downriver people" or the Sioux word "Akakaze" meaning "people of the south wind". The pronunciation of Arkansas was made official by an act of the state legislature in 1881, after a dispute between the two U.S. Senators from Arkansas. One wanted to pronounce the name /ɑrˈkænzəs/ ar-kan-zəs and the other wanted /ˈɑrkənsɔː/ ar-kən-saw.[5]
In 2007, the state legislature officially declared the possessive form of the state's name to be Arkansas's.[6]

Thanks jim9251. Very informative and helpful. Seems that some in Arkansas aren't interested in the views of outsiders, however legitimate they may be.

Having never been how do you know if your views are legitimate or not?

It's great that you know it's not pronounced like its spelled and that Little Rock is the capital. You won't get laughed at for pronouncing it wrong if you ever make it to Arkansas so you must have had a decent geography teacher.

So what about the area you live?
When I lived in Eastern Arkansas I loved: the fact that there was so much "helping" to do, folks appreciated it, the cotton fields were beautiful and so were the sunsets! Good luck to you!

But you list your location as Little Rock?

I grew up in SE Arkansas. Dermott to be exact. I hate mosquitoes. HATE HATE HATE HATE THEM The only safe place from the was riding my bike behind the spray truck as it drove around town.

I've also lived in Monticello (college), Fayetteville (grad school), Sheridan, White Hall and Little Rock. If things go as planned, I'll be back in SE AR pretty soon.

During summer little league games they would crop dust the entire town. I've been exposed to more farm chemicals than 1,000 city folks so I expect to get that 3rd eye growing in the back of my head.
