Moving to Salem from Alaska (Maybe)
Hello, We are considering moving to either Salem or Camp. We have been in the arctic for too many years and are tired of 60 below winters! Love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, 24 hours of daylight and auto racing. Our 16 year old daughter has been driving stock cars for three years now. Are there any 1/4 to 1/2 mile paved oval tracks nearby? (Yes we actually race cars up here, sled dogs were too slow)
My wife and I are re-model contractors here. Any need for that type of service near Salem? Hunting moose and caribou have grown old... The change to deer would be nice.
How well do locals take to new folks moving in the area? I promise we wont bring any polar bears with us.
Any information would be helpful. Thanks

Hello there, here's a link for the only track in the area. It's in Yellville, about an hour from Salem. It's a 3/8 mile track that just came under new ownership and has been doing well this year. There's lots of growth here in this area. [cut] Here's the link http://www.northcentralarspeedway.com/

If you can stand HOT and VERY humid temperatures and if you are nice, friendly people who don't tell the locals how you did it up north (just kidding), you would probably find a warm reception. I live in Mtn Home and Salem and west to Mtn Home can always use reasonably priced remodelers. Many times people from away come in and want the same pay for work as they got where they came from and down here if you get $10-15 an hour for labor you are borderline wealthy....:-) I smile, but THAT'S the truth. Good luck if you come this way.

Thanks for the info wezey. As for liking hot weather....I have no idea. I've lived in the arctic my whole life so Arkansas will be quite the change. We're very laid back, and would never dream of coming there and telling everyone how we do it here in the arctic unless they ask. I feel too many people do that when they move to a new community. Just look at what all the Californians have done to all of the western states... They moved in and changed everything to conform to their ways! I look at like this. If I moving there, it is I who will have to conform to Fulton county ways. If I don't like it, I can take my silly frozen butt back home. We are just really looking forward to coming down there. The change will be nice. Oh yeah, we ended up buying a piece of property in Camp. I,m sure everyone will know when the Alaskan people arrive LOL. Thanks again for the reply.

Hey there Alaska. Just curious, where do you live in Alaska. We moved to Nome, AK from Mountain Home, Arkansas back in 1994 and now in West Virginia since 2000. It's a pretty area around Mtn. Home, Salem, etc, and you will like it. I enjoyed Nome, but bush Alaska has its drawbacks as well as benefits as you well know. Look forward to your reply.

Hi! I was doing contract work near Fairbanks last year for 6 months, then our next site we were sent to was Texarkana AR. We arrived the day after Christmas and couldn't believe we just did a 100 degree change. It was -40 when we left Alaska and 60 when we arrived here.
