How 'bout the Arkansas Country Doctor Museum in Lincoln, AR?

While technically not a museum, Washington, AR should be on every Arkansans to do list.

Bradley House Museum
I've not only been in it -- I used to live in it. Seriously. In 1975-76 my family and I moved to Jasper -- I was 11 at the time. The first place we tried to rent was falling apart and had no wiring in half the rooms. The Bradley House at that time was essentially a duplex, with one unit upstairs and one downstairs. The downstairs half became available, so we rented that. My parents room was in the front on the right as you face the house, to the right of the stairs, in the room where the medical office display is now. Our living room was to the left, now the main exhibit room. Immediately behind that was the kitchen. The area at the back of the house that's now the historical society office and gift shop was completely different. The area behind the counter where the staff are was actually my bedroom -- there was a hallway going back from the kitchen with rooms on either side. Obviously, the old cabin that's now behind the house wasn't there, but of course the storm cellar was.

We were there from about August or Sept of 75 until January 76 -- having other people living upstairs from us and coming in the same front door and having to go up the stairs through the middle of "our" area just wasn't working for us as a family with two young kids. My parents realized that the rental options in a place the size of Jasper were going to be too limited, and so they took the plunge and for the first time in their lives bought a house -- a little 1000 sq. ft. brand new house on a former landfill next to a cemetery in Harrison -- for about $18,000.

I mainly remember the Bradley House as cold and uncomfortable, particularly back in my room. But it was convenient -- we attended the Methodist church across the street, and it was only a few blocks walk over to the school (and to the swimming hole on the Little Buffalo -- unfortunately, two of my classmates drowned in it the following summer, after we'd moved to Harrison).

I didn't realize that the Bradley House had become the Newton County museum when I took my family through there to visit a few years ago -- didn't even know that it was called the Bradley House. Was delighted to find out that not only had it been turned into a museum, but it happened to be open when we were there so that we could go in and tour it.

Here's the set of photos I took that day: Jasper Arkansas 2007 - a set on Flickr

Strangely, the Bradley House is only one of three places I've lived that's on the National Register of Historic Places -- the others are the Marston House in Clarendon, Ark., and Martin Hall at Hendrix College in Conway.

I'll also second the Rogers Historical Museum -- my mom works there as a volunteer and my whole family and I always enjoy visiting it when we're there.

Great Post. Thanks. This Thread has turned out as I hoped it would. People are posting about places we never would have know about otherwise. Thanks all. Please keep it up.

The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources, I'm sure you've heard of down here in Smackover (outside of El Dorado). What you may not have heard of though is the South Arkansas Museum of African-American History, and the Newton House Museum, the only antebellum home open to the public in El Dorado.

Today the depot museum in Arkadelphia had a display on the ghost town of Graysonia. Being the rainy day it was, I was surprised to see the large crowd there. The wonderful photos will remain up for a limited time so you may like to go check it out.

The magazine "Arkansas Wild" has listed four railroad depot museums on U.S. Highway 70 east of Little Rock and all could be made in one day. They are Lonoke, Carlisle, Brinkley, and Hazen, and all are on the National Register. They appear to be worth checking out.
