Based upon some commentaries regarding a request for information on Oden, perhaps it might be wise to consider another geographical location for relocation. Some respondents seemed to be happy living in the middle of nowhere and could offfer little more. One kindly participant commented on geography, another on the wildlife... but regarding other basic needs (post office, bank, grocery store, library, hardware store, etc.) I heard nothing. It would appear that Oden must be right up there "next to nowhere." Ok, let's try again... what's the next viable town/hamlet/village that is considered SOMEWHERE about which hardcore information is available? Or is my leg being pulled?Maybe Oden is one of the best kept secrets in Arkansas and the board participants intend to keep it that way.

Here is what you will likely find in Oden:
A post office, 1-2 gas stations, a small convenience store, a diner, and perhaps something that passes for a grocery store (could be the convenience store). I'm probably being generous with this list. Bank? not impossible but not highly likely. Library? Extremely improbably. Hardware store? the convenience store that doubles as bait and tackle will probably have a half aisle of hardware related items for the immediate needs that can't wait for a trip into Hot Springs...at a price that will make you want to go ahead and drive into Hot Springs. Satellite photos now available on Yahoo maps indicate the largest structure in town is the high school. There are only a handful of other buildings of any reasonable size. Have you heard of local.yahoo.com?? Give it a try... |

Thank you for the "likely scenario" of what one might find in Oden. You may be right up there next to accurate, but it would still be insightful to hear from a resident of Oden - in other words, "right from the horse's mouth" if, indeed, we can find one (resident). I guess it would be safe to assume that there is no Chamber of Commerce.. one would have to go to ___________(fill in the blank) for information.

I can tell you a bit about Oden, though not much about the town now. My parents lived there until about 1975. I left the town in the 1950's and have not been back in at least 20 years.
I do know that there is a nice lodge on the river that is enjoyed by vacationers and hunters and fishers. Montgomery County is still quite rural so hunting and fishing abound. I am sorry I cannot tell you more. |
