We have a family river cabin at MV - and my advice would be BE SEEN. The more you are seen, particularly in off season, the quicker your acceptance. Eat at Woods Drug Store and the little diner across the street, go to the music nights after everyone has cut out from vacation...shop local as much as possible. Even though we are part-timers, we've had no problems at all fitting in, and in fact are welcomed when we close down the cabin for the winter in early December and don't return until March.
If you intend to buy a home there, DM me for more info if you don't already have a Realtor. I can hook you up with a gem who is a longtime personal friend.
Welcome!
Thank you for the info. This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for. For now, we have a place to live [still a little while before we make the actual move], but will certainly message you should we begin searching for a home.
Thank you again!

Well, that should be status-quo, but where I live now, the locals are quite rude & generally don't want to be bothered [EVERY-SINGLE-SOUTHERNER we've met up here has said the same thing...w/out fail]. And, the irony is, this is a place known for good ol' friendly folks nationwide...until you move here !
Thank you for the response.
Also, any employment suggestions might be helpful. Will need some supplemental income...nothing major though. Thank you again, you've been EXTREMELY helpful.

Thanks for the advice...sincerely. I live in a tourist area now [about 2 hrs. N.] & the locals here are terribly rude & cold...as has been noted by more out of town folks than I can remember.

Are you talking about Branson because if you are, your experience is the polar opposite of ours and we've been in the general area for three+ years. Something's wrong. Have you looked within? In another post somewhere you said you didn't care for Northerners (how ecumenical) so maybe your judgments are showing.

As I clearly stated, every-single-southerner we've run into has said the IDENTICAL thing to us. Guess they should each, independent of one another, "look within" ? BTW, you just intimated a "judgement" call on me .
We love every soul alive, just notice quite a different attitude amongst those from the North. Trust me, the South has its problems too &, comparatively, the crime-rates are much better up here than the South. So, not all bad.
I visit Mt View several times a year, the Blanchard Springs Caverns and the folk center. A highlight is eating in the Skillet restaurant and attending a show at the Ozark Folk center. Some of the best shows there have been local gospel music. I have always found everyone in town friendly and I like the flavor of the town.
With you being a minister, you already know the problems of faiths being practiced in small rural towns. In every area you are going to find the radical fundamentalists in this manner. I find in most small Arkansas towns, these folks tend to stay mostly to themselves. When you get into the mainstream faiths such as Baptist and Methodist, etc, you find a more ordered agenda, and even in clannish type churches, you can go in and sit down and enjoy a church service. I have always been warmly welcomed in any churches I attended as a stranger. You just don't want to drive 10 miles down a dirt road, open some barbed wire gates, pull up to a place you feel a little strange being there, and get out of your car to go to church. This is where the weird stuff might be going on. But, that is, after all, those people's business.
I once heard a man say "The people I most respect in life are those who demonstrate a competent ability to mind their own business, and keep their nose out of mine". I think this holds true in most areas of life.
Mountain View, AR, to me, is an excellent small town to live in or visit.

Hearty "Amen" to the bolded above!
You will certainly always be welcome & treated personable @ the church I will likely soon be pastoring there....& no barbed wire since it's right in the middle of town! Need to be officially installed first though !
I lived and worked in Mtn. View for only a few months. Being from St. Louis, I guess I could be considered a "yankee", however I never got the impression that that mattered. I found most of the residents more than willing to make me feel a part of the community and at home. I believe they were sincere. I agree with all that has been said above about being yourself, being authentic, losing any "attitudes" and just being the best person you can be. Kinda' sounds like good advice no matter where you call home, I think.
My people have resided in the area of mountain view since just before the war between the states. Locals are always polite. This doesn't mean you will be accepted as a local. You won't. Having said that being "southern" will help to a degree. Be polite and understand most of the folk who move into small arkansas communities have a tendancy to do their harm and then move on. Don't get your feelings hurt if your child isn't included in a lot of social situations. It's because they mostly keep to their own extended families. Blood counts for a lot there. Good luck. I'd live there in a heartbeat but employment opportunities aren't all that great.
Actually "Don't drive down a gravel road and open someone's gate" is pretty good advice whether you're headed for a church or not
Also the book "Hill Folks" by Brooks Blevins give excellent historical background of the area including the politics behind the Folk Center beginnings.
