Monticello
Howdy,
Does anyone here know much about Monticello, Arkansas? I recently applied for a teaching job there, and it looks like a wonderful job, but I have not been able to find out much about the community. Any information will be much appreciated, but specifically I am looking for how much it might cost to rent an apartment, how safe it is in different parts, and whether or not it has a gym that men can use. I searched and found a Curves, but did not find any other gym. Also, any general information about the quality of life in Monticello would be appreciated.
Thank you, and I hope that everyone has a great day.

Monticello is one of the larger towns in South Central Arkansas. It is a college town (UAM) and so most fast food chains and other stores can be found there. I've stayed a few nights in Monticello (or Monticeller as the locals call it) when traveling for work and I can tell you that people are very friendly in the area. I don't know much about the quality of living, or which part of town is good/bad. It's a agricultural college and you'll see that agriculture is the primary econimic base in rural Arkansas. There are many chicken houses in the area, and lots of cattle farms as well. Logging is also a large part of the economy.
Hunting and fishing in S. Arkansas is great. Lots of small body deer in the area, but they have nice racks! Also Monticello is only 1.5 hours from Little Rock if you need to go to the city for shopping and other things that Monticello may not offer. Hope this info helps.

Monticello is one of the best towns in southeast arkansas. It has a four year college(The university of arkansas-monticello) which happens to be the number 1 leading agriculture and forestry school in the nation. The people are quite friendly and they have alot of good stores such as, wal mart, cato, stage, exc. As far as the "bad parts" of town you may not want to be around the east side of town at night. Truthfully though, i think monticello is overall good, i mean, yea every town has its crime, but its one of the better towns to be in. If you want my opinion, Its one thousand times better to do your commuting in monticello, then pine bluff! So there you have it =)

I lived there for 4 years and married a local (hopefully we'll be returning to Monticello soon). I LOVED living there! It is extremely safe there and UAM is by far the most friendliest college I've ever attended. My brother and I rented a very cute 2 bedroom/1 bath apt. for $400/month. Rent's not bad there at all--even if you wanted to get a little house or something. There's not a ton of stuff to do there---but that means you don't have to put up with a lot of stuff like traffic, etc. When I lived in Mont., there was a really popular gym/health club right off Hwy. 425 sort of across from the EZ Mart and Union Bank. I'm not sure if it's still there though. Hope you enjoy living there! Go Weevils!

That pretty much sums it up. It's a redneck town just like the rest of the cities in the south. Just remember, there are not a lot of jobs in the south, so if you don't like it, there's a very good chance you'll have to move again.
