I was offfered a job in Memphis thought it would be great to leave Michigan and go down there. Cheaper living, more jobs ,less taxes ,sounds great intill I started reading these post about crime and schools being not so good. I like being in the country. Is it better to live in Arkansas,Memphis,or Mississippi? Also can you give me names of towns in these areas that are country setting but close to memphis. I really like to small towns.

If you want to live in Arkansas, I would also vote for Marion if you will be working downtown or close to downtown Memphis. Do not live in West Memphis, Ark. The only possible problem will be crossing the bridges, traffic problems tend to happen on bridges, but there are two of them so at least you have choices. If you will be working out in East Memphis, then Collierville, Tn would be a good choice.
Arkansas has lower property taxes but has a state income tax. Tennessee property taxes are higher but there is no state income tax. Good luck. |

with North Mississippi around Hernado. I have a friend that lives in this area that works in Memphis for Valero Entergy. She has a beautiful house in the country. She loves it in this area. We enjoy visiting her there. She lives around the Lake Coromont area.

Desoto County in north Mississippi that boarders Shelby County TN (where Memphis is) is the fastest growing county in the state and for good reason. Most of the growth come from people who don't want to live in Memphis but enjoy a short commute for a better quality of life to the south. Much better schools in Desoto County (Horn Lake, Olive Branch, and South Haven) although the taxes are different. TN has no state income tax. Lower crime rate, better police and government. Memphis itself is pretty rough unless you get to the extreme east side of town. Even nicer areas like Germantown, Cordova, and Collierville have seen crime on the rise over the past six years. We still have friends that live there in Arlington and Lakeland, northeast of town, in some of the nicest homes and neighborhoods I've ever been in. More people too are moving to Fayette County east of Memphis to get out of the government of Shelby County. I don't know much about Marion, AR. I live in the extreme other end of the state but I can tell you that Marion is about the only place on the West Side of the river that I would even consider if I were working in Memphis. West Memphis, AR is a truckstop and a traffic jam.

If you go for Mississippi, stay north. I was born and raised in the deep south part of Miss., and it wasn't fun. If you happen to get even close to Jackson, TURN AROUND and head NORTH.

First of all thanks for everyones comments. This is a life changing deal for me ande my family I hoping if I choose to make it it will be the last move we make. So I want to find the right spot. So far mississippi sounds like the place for me. I really don't want to have to cross a bridge twice a day every day. I'm sure you guys heard what happened in Minnesota. Makes me alitttle leary about crossing a bridge that much. So north mississippi is a safe country setting or small town setting area? How about the schools around there as far as saftey, acedemics, and sports? How are taxes? What do houses usually sell for? How's the economy down there? Do you get snow? Is gas any cheaper? Is beer any cheaper? What towns are nearest to memphis within an 30-45min drive time. THANKS FOR ALL INFO KEEP IT COMING PLEASE!
