I am moving from Corpus Christi, TX to Bismarck AR soon. I don't know anyone there. I am moving because my husband want to move to a pretty place with four seasons.... I am sad about leaving my family and friends. My son who lives in San Antonio will be eight hours from me and my other son will be 10 hours from me. My friends for 30+ years are so sad for me to go too. I am afraid that I won't make lifelong friends there. What can I do to stop being afraid.

ladyb, uprooting and moving can be very traumatic. I know because in the past I moved too often to too many places, but it always worked out. In Bismarck there is nothing to be "afraid" of, but I know there is the dread of meeting new people and getting acclimated to new surroundings. In 1958 I moved to Malvern, which is about 25 miles east of Bismarck, and had the same dread. I met wonderful people and made many very good friends. I think you will have that experience too.

I don't know if you know anything about the community, so I'll give you some "highlights". It was once a farming community at the crossroads of Highways 7 and 88, but with the building of Lake DeGray, and the associated tourist business, it has become a small thriving community, but still farm/cattle country. Baptist Medical System will soon build a well equipped clinic there. It is a prime fishing and deer hunting area if you or your husband are interested in that. Also, there is great boating on the lake. Hot Springs is about 30 miles north on Highway 7 and they have good eating places, clubs, and various other activities. But Highway 7 is known as "the suicide highway" because there have been so many fatal wrecks on the curvy road.

I would suggest that you go to the grocery store, gas station, etc., and introduce yourself as a new resident, and get to know the people. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the good reception. Oh, I was about to forget; They also have one or two branch banks there, so if you plan to change your banking business, that's another good place to get "your foot in the door".

I'm sure others will also add comments here. Please let us know how it works out because that is one of the great things about City-Data, people helping people. Welcome to "The Natural State" and don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

Nothing in Bismark. Its about 20 miles from HS and I think its closer to Arkadelphia than HS. I looked but its not for me. Closer to HS is better for me. We bought near HSV about 7 miles from HSV and 10 from HS and 45 from LR. close to everything you could want to do.

Its not that bad. I live about 2 hours away and have been there a few times. There are beautiful lakes nearby and Hot Springs is not far away. You should have no problem making friends. Plenty of churches , etc where you can make friends.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.I know that I will make friends there. It's just difficult leaving everything I know and my family and friends. I get bored easy so I guess I will be going to HS very often. I love to go to the movies, but the theaters really suck there. They need an updated theater for such a tourist attraction city. The city is beautiful and I am looking forward to finding things to do there. Thanks again, Have a nice day!!!!

ladyb, Malvern has a small, family owned and operated movie theater, and I understand they try to have the latest releases. They also have, from time to time, special showings. It may be worth checking out for a change of scenery.
