Thanks, arkansasguy - I started to mention that area but when we looked at something there it WAS considered Pottsville. There are lots of great outlying areas, including Deer Run, and accessibility is good except in the most inclement of weather - but then again, Arkansas notoriously shuts down for bad weather, so anywhere you go....there you are.

The realtor is sending listings (bulk email) that include homes in outlying towns; Dardanelle, Pottsville, Dover and Delaware. I do want to be near to the conviences of the main town of Russellville, how are these areas as far as traffic in or out of Russellville? Crime?

Dardanelle notoriously has lower property values, although the price range is the same. I love Yell Co. because it is more rural, but you don't get the bang for your buck there. Dover is north and is a nice little community, although I think it is somewhat more expensive. Delaware is kind of the boonies. The problem with Dardanelle this time of year is if the bridge ices over, but there's a super Wal Mart there and eating places so you aren't completely stuck. There are a number of bad wrecks on the bridge during lousy weather - I just stay away from it. Bear in mind that the smaller towns, although not far in distance from Russellville, can be treacherous to get to in inclement weather. Traffic isn't really a consideration , and crime truly is almost nonexistent. Neither of those should be a huge concern for you...mostly just weather-related stuff, and about 360 days a year you don't worry about that either!

Wasnt Kim Darbys character [little sister i think rooster cogburn called her] in the movie True Grit from Yell County Arkansas?

That's her...Mattie Ross. I know the movie by heart! LaBouef was played by another Arkansas native, Glen Campbell.
Unfortunately, none of it was filmed in Yell Co., but in Colorado. Sure was pretty, though....

Off topic again...but I loved it when he was drunk riding on his horse and fell off and told Mattie and LaBoeuf "we'll camp right here"...I would seriously bet I saw that movie 20 times. I was living in Mississippi at the time and imagined it was Arkansas they were in. Of course the mountains gave it away, but still...and I am pretty sure I'd never heard of Dardanelle OR Yell County then, and here I am about 1 mile away!

I got back from 4 days of looking at houses in Russellville and have a few that I am considering putting a bid on. Nice city.
I went around the mountains that flank Russellville, the one to the north is Crow Mountain, What other mountains surround Russellville? I know Nebo is close, but isn't that the next valley over near Dardenell? |
