No offense to Bentonville or the surrounding cities, but not only does Walmart control them, it controls a lot of what occurs in the united states and the world...specifically the retail sector.
9 out of 10 people outside the state of Arkansas wouldnt even be able to give you the city name (Fayetteville) where the Univ of Ark is located. (Best response would be to ask SEC football fans who attend the games there)LOL

9 out of 10 people nationally wouldn't be able to tell you where Wal-Mart's headquarters are. So what? Nita pointed out to you that there are businesses outside of Wal-Mart based in Northwest Arkansas. The presence of the University itself has been a source of growth and progress in the area. Before Wal-Mart asked vendors to open offices in the area, the region was experiencing steady growth and it's employment figures led the state. Yes, Wal-Mart is a presence. But Waltonville?? I don't think so.

Most Americans can't point out Wyoming on a map. Most Americans can't tell you who wrote "Romeo & Juliet".
Generalizations help simplify the world.

I would guess more people could tell you where the univesity is than could tell you where Wal Mart is headquartered. I know, before we moved here, I could have told you where U.A was located or about anyway but had no idea WalMart was headquartered right here. I do agree Wal Mart has a lot of control over the retail sector..This isn't necessarily a bad thing for AR or a good thing...

Another Worthless Post by me.
The pollen and allergens must really be getting to me. Once again, nothing intelligent added to the thread by my post. I will reserve posting in the future until I have a thoughtful and constructive comment. .....

I don't understand how people can even say it feels contiguous. There is a definite separation between Springdale and Rogers with little to no development along 540. Rogers/Bentonville as one city I can understand, Fayetteville/Springdale as one I can understand but all 4 as one city doesn't make sense. There is a lot of undeveloped land at the Washington and Benton county line.
Also just to throw this out there, the residents of a city make the city and the residents of Fayetteville would not agree with the residents of Springdale on many issues. I believe that is part of what makes NWA a somewhat unique area. Fayetteville may cater to one type of person while Rogers may cater to another.

I agree with you, each city is very different and certainly each city attracts a different type.

There is little development along 540 because 540 is relatively new. That was all farmland not too long ago. Look along old Hwy 71. If you didn't have a sign there, could you tell when you are passing from one county to the other?

I believe you can. The development along 71 is still not very dense with quiet a bit of undeveloped land around Bethel Heights and Lowell.

A block here and there, and most of it that has been bought by developers.
