I see names for subdivisions but... (Fayetteville, Farmington: house, lease, schools)

I have no idea what part of Fayetteville they are in. Where are the best areas to live in around Fayetteville? The east side? north side? south? Names of subdivisions mean nothing to me, I prefer to live in an established neighborhood that doesn't constrain me to a subdivision's board's rules? I don't want to have to ask permission from a board as to which flowers I can plant in front of my house.

I don't live in Fayetteville, so some of the people there might give you better information, but I think generally the growth in Fayetteville has been outward. That is to say that the north, south, east and west boundaries have all been extended, there are nice neighborhoods and not so nice neighborhoods in all directions. For me, with the exception of the historic district, I would look for neighborhoods away from commercial districts, just because of noise and traffic. My preference would probably be for the east side, but that is also furthest from 540, so it can be inconvenient. But when you visit Fayetteville and drive around, I think you'll find nice homes all over.

how much are you willing to spend on a house? West side is probably your best bet, east side is nice but it's a little far from 540 if that's important to you...

OK then, I would say east side is best with west a close second. Having said that please realize I am generalizing. There are some very old "run down" neighborhoods in the eastern part of town. But there are also some wonderful neighborhoods along Crossover Road (Hwy. 265).
So you don't want a neighborhood with covenants and restrictions? That is fine but be aware that there is nothing to keep you neighbors from using "eccentric" colors on their home for example.

There are some good neighborhoods on the western edge of town mostly along Hwy. 16 west or along Hwy 112 spur. These are not as "upscale" as the ones along Crossover but they are nice neighborhoods. A lot does depend on what price home you are looking for as one of the other posts mentioned.

The reason we don't like subdivisions is that the homes are usually thrown up quickly, cheaply and most importantly poorly (constructed, that is). My husband would prefer to be out in the country but from what I've been learning in my investigations of the area, we should stay in the Fayetteville school district due to better performing schools there.

We've been looking at homes on-line in the $325,000 range. We'd prefer a 4-5 bedroom, triple stall garage and a minimum of .5 acre with trees. My husband has to have trees! My mother-in-law will be moving in with us at some point so we need a SEPARATE living area for her. So an ideal would be a finished basement with a kitchenette (or wet bar), bedroom and bath.

That sounds like a tall order but I think there has to be something like that out there. Since we're also able to live in Springfield, MO I've been searching on-line there too. It seems to have larger homes for cheaper there. The draw back is that it is so much more of a larger city.

We're hopefully going to visit soon and take a look around at both cities.

Fayetteville is very nice. The most sophisticated part of ARkansas IMO.

You should try the area east of Fayetteville between Fayetteville and Goshen. Lots of big, nice homes there with land. I think it's in the Fayetteville school district also.

When the posters on here say west, I think they really mean northwest. There are a lot of newer subdivisions in the northwest part of town. West of Fayetteville will put you in Farmington. Not a bad community, though, and the schools are pretty good.

All of Fayetteville is nice. My only suggestion would be to not move south of 6th Street. That's really the only shady area of town.
