Shipwreck, I'm going to pose a challenge to you - find one nice thing to say about ED. You've had four posts bashing the city...do you ever find the half full glass? I'm not bashing you - your opinions are yours - but surely there has to be something good about ED or you wouldn't stay there forever ?

What was your decision?
I am new on this forum so I assume I am way to late to give you any advise.
No town or city can escape crime. I was born and raised in El Do and never regretted on second of it. It was a great town. Not sure where you got the informaton that the housing was cheap?
Housing everywhere right now is cheap! that is why no one is selling and everybody is just trying to refinance what they have at the ridiculous low interest rates. That is nation wide.
El Dorado has some excellent neighborhoods. More better than not! They have good restaurants, movie threatres, etc.
In my opinion they have a good school district, the people in the town are nice and friendly, so what is the problem? Or maybe I should ask "what job opportunity is it?"
I'd be glad to give you additional input on El Dorado. I no longer live there but none of my reasons for not living there have to do anything with crime. It is a nice town. They have good public and private schools. After reading the other comments from people, I did not see anyone that mentioned Parker's Chapel. If you want to live outside of El Dorado check that area out. If you want county living check out Junction City. Other areas to consider would be out toward the El Dorado airport, out Mt. Holly Road or another small town would be Warren. I guess that would all depend on how far you want to drive to work.
I am not sure what all school districts in that entire area have consolidated to date. But if I was a parent I would choose the El Dorado School district for my kids for public school, or West Side Christian School for private school. Free college if they go K - 12, and great discounts if they start later than K.
Basically I was just wondering what happened from your first inquiry. Did you end up moving to El Do? If so what part? Are you liking it or not?

From El Do
Bily,
You should not look at El Do in that way. If you still have parents that live there and other friends and family, don't look at it that way. I agree that it is not what we knew as kids, but it is something to others that have grown up after us, and it is something to the kids that are growing up there today.
The difference today is the same that is everywhere else in this world. You have to lock your doors now and you can't let your kids play outside after dark.
There are not many places anywhere that are the same as when the kids in our generation grew up in our lifetime. The world is different now.
I moved to Houston in 87. Mostly just for the money. It is no better than anywhere else if you understand that your family should come before your work. That includes your parents and siblings. In 87, I did not understand that. Way before today I learned to better understand that fact. There will always be a job somewhere for everyone if they want one, but family and home towns, only come once in a lifetime. Don't throw it away and don't discourage others from having the same wonderful childhood that we did.
At one point I moved from Houston, and later I moved backed to Houston.
Houston is great place, just way too big for me and kids can not play out in the yard or neighborhoods without total supervison. I have no children so I am not saying this out of some weird mother thing!
Now I live in an area by the things that make me happy. Lakes, Rivers, Steams, Mountains, etc. Houston is great for money, but money is not everything. With what the politicians would say today, I am very low income but not to the point where they will allow me to get any free stuff like many people do.
I am happy with my life and very happy with my surroundings. Sometimes the beauty of what you can see each morning when you wake up, is much more than the income that you are making. If you have the right view,
El Dorado is not ugly.
I do live in Arkansas now, but not El Dorado. I do miss going to see my parents in El Dorado even though sometimes it was a hassle for me or with my work since employers always have problems if someone is gone longer than they expect. My parents are now dead and I can't take back the times that I might could have gone home or stayed longer, but didn't due to my job.
Don't regret tomorrow,,, something that you could take care of today.
Parents are precious and they won't be here forever.
Enjoy the visits that you can have with your parents and enjoy the new El Dorado, and your old home town while you are there.

Been there, done that, doing that, many times and I'm getting older. Not sure how much longer I can survive doing it. I can't tell you my age or my educational level as this is a small town and I wish to state my opinion, but I don't wish to be on the front page of the newspaper. But I have many (meaning more than one) degrees, college diplomas, certifications, awards, and what-have-you. Plus many years of outstanding experience and accomplishments.
Actually I'm pretty impressed with the way I preform at interviews. I believe I probably perform too well. I know how to act in an interview, trust me, I've had the training and experience.
If it wasn't for my friends and family and I would most likely be dead right now and/or at least homeless and on my way there. Everyone around here is doing bad.......That's the point that I'm trying to get across.
I've pretty much done that and exhausted those options. What you're telling me, I've already done, been through and doing again. There' almost no option that I haven't tried yet.
Sad thing is, most of the Arkansans in the South are like me or are going to be like me.

If you have a college degree, join Teach for America. Or the State is hiring and from the conversatioin I had this morning with the woman from Family Services they are in desperate need of people. The Department of Education also has a similar program as Teach for America. Good Luck. Watch "Pursuit of Happyness" if that man can get where he did from where he was, anyone can get up.

thanks for your input, but eldo is an armpit, please dont try to tell me how great that place is, it wont work, the facts and statistics, which you can find on city-data.com disagree with you...
I feel MUCH safer in houston than I do in eldo, thats because I am. I can easily afford to live anywhere in eldo I would chose too.

OC, perhaps you could be just a wee bit more specific. You seem to have major complaints but no explanation for them.
