We are going to be vacationing in Arkansas in March and was looking for some recommendations. No kids will be on the trip. We were thinking around the Ozarks. We really want to see some pretty scenery, not congested tourism spots. Some neat shops, great fishing, beautiful mountain and lake views. Would love to stay somewhere other than a traditional hotel. Any suggesstions? Must see places? Good places to stay? Other places to visit around there? Would appreciate any and all suggestions and tips. What will the weather be like there? Any good eats?

Well it is touristy, not much in March but I would recommend Eureka Springs.

Trout fishing - stay at a resort on the White River, Gaston's is one famous resort.

Bass fishing - Bull Shoals, I don't know of a specific place to stay, but it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Arkansas has a great state park system. Many of them have lodges and/or cabins.

I can recommend renting a house or a cabin in Gilbert, on the Buffalo, and taking a canoe trip down a stretch of the river there.

canoe trip sounds fun but I think it will be pretty chilly in March, especially winter seems to be coming late just like last year. OP one place you will want to visit is Eureka Springs, it can be very touristy but not until later in the year. As far as beauty, AR is always pretty, but remember you will still be hitting the state before our real spring landscape sets in. If you want to stay someplace other than a touristy hotel, check Vacations rental. com. Or I think that is it.

Are you thinking of VRBO.com? (Vacation Rentals By Owner) We found the greatest condo in Hot Springs through VRBO, for way less than a motel room.

Lifesgood, "the Ozarks" is a pretty broad area. There is literally so much to see and do in the Ozarks it would be hard for me to get it all into a post. Could you be more specific? Like, what direction will you be coming from, for one thing?

We stayed at B&B in Hot Springs that was on the Lake. Had a nice 'mini vacation' (4 days). Hot springs has some interesting things to see and nice shops.
For trout fishing you are going to want the White River over by cotter or Mountain Home. For Bass fishing Lake Dardanelle is probably the best but not very close to the mountains. Beaver Lake is 'ok' fishing but it isn't hard to get skunked there either. The NW Ark lakes do not fish anything like Texas lakes and Bull Shoals is downright tough.

Petit Jean State Park's cabins, adjacent to historic Mather Lodge atop beautiful Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton, would work well for you. The lodge is a CCC building, as are many additional PJ structures, and offers spectacular views of Cedar Canyon plus good dining (the dining room overlooks the canyon). Cabins include both historic and modern structures, and include fireplaces, decks, picnic tables, fully equipped kitchens and full bathrooms, and comfortable bedrooms and living rooms. Many also overlook the canyon. Rates are very reasonable, and although cabins cost more than lodge rooms, you get more for your money there.

Cedar Falls is a short drive from the lodge and cabin area, and is the highest waterfall in Arkansas. The Bear Cave (not really a cave, but unusual grotto-like rock formations with a rustic trail winding up and over and through them), gorgeous overlooks, lots of hiking trails, turtle rocks (unique formations which resemble herds of Galopagos tortoises), and prehistoric petroglyphs are also close at hand.

It will be late winter, but a few subtle signs of spring will be present if your trip will occur in late March - possibly even some less than subtle signs, if spring comes early this year. Hope for early spring wildflowers.

Petit Jean is about an hour and a half's drive north of Little Rock, so you could use it as a base and head down to the Little Rock museums and Clinton Presidential Library, then get back in time for dinner, if you choose. There is also antique shopping in Morrilton, not far from the foot of the mountain. The park's lodge has a small shop which includes crafts and local artwork, in addition to other more typical souvenirs, and there is a larger gift shop (also CCC built) down the road, although I am not sure if it is open in March.

Petit Jean State Park is located atop Petit Jean Mountain, and both are pronounced "petty gene" and get their name from the legend of a young French woman who disguised herself as a cabin boy in order to accompany her sweetheart on shipboard to American.

Enjoy your visit - Arkansas is a beautiful state!

Hemmed-In Hollow is the highest waterfall in Arkansas...and also the highest one between the Rockies and the Appalachians.

Hope I get to see it someday...the hike down is murder, but you can get to it more easily from the Buffalo.
