Yes. Just because they are largely populated areas doesn't mean tornadoes decide to pass them over. Welcome to the South, we do have tornadoes. Although it's hard to call NWA the South. Kind of an extension of Missouri, really.

Here's a link to tornado warnings and activity in that area. Please note - this is for a two year period and does not necessarily indicate touch downs by twisters, but it is unconfirmed reports and confirmed sightings by the National Weather Service. Most twisters don't touch down or cause damage. Flip side is that they come together very quickly and it is difficult to predict if they will touch down or whirl on up into the sky. You just pretty much know instinctively after a while if the conditions are right and go from there. All that being said, a battery operated radio may be your best friend if the power fails. I have a healthy respect for the power of a twister and the devastation one can cause but they are entirely unpredictable about what they choose to take and what they choose to leave behind - which is the scariest thing about them.

Most of the tornados go north or south of Siloam Springs. Rarely do we get a confirmed tornado. Any damage done is usually from high winds.

Yep. For some reason, Oklahoma keeps sending them this way
Seriously, we've been fortunate that the few actual tornadoes have not been of the extreme variety (not that a "small" tornado is not dangerous). We've been here five and a half years and only 2 tornadoes have hit - one in Centerton; one in NE Bentonville that continued into Little Flock. Everywhere I've lived has had tornadic weather: Russellville in the River Valley, El Dorado in SoArk, and DFW, Texas (not to mention baseball-size hail). As mentioned, tornadoes are part of life in the South. Kind of like iced tea and fried chicken. --jcd |
