This was a long time ago and was a total random event. This murder in NO WAY is indicative of West Memphis as a whole. The men are still in jail, one on death row. The case draws a lot of emotion, which I'm not sure is appropriate to discuss in much detail on this board. In terms of moving to the area, this event should not have any bearing on your decision. Like you mentioned, you can look up plenty of info online about the case.

I went on to read many articles (plus the viewing of the youtube documentary) regarding the case and have found it quite disturbing. What is the general consensus now regarding the conviction of the 3 men being incarcerated for the crime? What is the overall opinion about the case all-round after all these years? So sad!!

I used to live there..grew up there, and it was a great place in the 80s. It's been about 17 years since I've been there (living in Michigan now). From what I've heard from a few friends and relatives there, it's become a bit of a slum...more "bad sides of town" then good, and even the upper-class neighborhood I grew up in has become the "projects".
Even though I have relatives there, I have no desire whatsoever to go there ever again. I have great memories of growing up there, graduating from West Memhpis High in 1986...but it's no longer the place I want to take my 5-year old daughter to see.

I too graduated from WM in 1988. I have lived in W.M. since college at the UofA in Fayetteville. My wife has always hated it. Her dad was in the air force, so they moved around a lot. You are right about how the area has changed..West Wood Acres has really declined. As well as other parts of town..
By the way, you graduated in 86, you must remember...Kenneth Sims....

Default I did it I lived there

West Memphis. No reason to stop and visit at all. There are some nice houses. It is a bedroom community outside of Memphis with two bridges and a big river seperating the two. The highway corridor that goes in front of WM is one of the biggest drug trafficing roadways in the U.S. as a consequence the police of all kinds are out there hot and very heavy.
Another consequence of this is if you stop anywhere and the law talks to you you better watch out they will put you in jail for nothing. In the grocery stores like two they have called Big Star there will be a man with a jacket that says police on it in big letters and he is dressed like he is ready for war... the whole relalia. Now the community is proud to have people dressed for war that carry guns. Maybe the reason the community is like that is because there a lot of murders and crime in that small area.
The only way a person can feel good there is if they are one of the ones
with a house good job and good vehicles and better yet be on the west side where most white people live. West Memphis is a very seedy place,
dirty, crime ridden, more cops than citizens roam the streets. Yet still dirty and frightening. You would probably be safer living in south central
los angeles.

The way I see it, as a West Memphian living in the heart of the city...we have just as much to offer as Marion so folks reading these posts, don't discount WM so fast. Talk to a realtor before making your decision. West Memphis school district is a great school district with everything to offer a child to be a success in life, black or white. Mid South Community College has partnered with both W. Mphs and Marion to help our kids get college credits for free via the Goldsby scholarship before they evey graduate high school. Many of our WM high school graduates already have their freshman year of college behind them before they graduate high school! This town has a great sense of community and pride. Soon we will have a wonderful Christmas tree lighting at Worthington Park with Carriage rides that harkens back to the long lost days of Christmas past. Yes, WM has had it's sad and terrible moments, probably more than it's fair share, God's hand is on this city and it is a great city with great people.

There are 2 places in Arkansas that you flat out do not want to live in: West Memphis and Pine Bluff. West Memphis is ok to visit if you're going to the dog track, but that's about it. Nothing redeeming about it except that it's close to Memphis, TN.

I know they're not as bad, but throw in both Helenas and Marianna on that.

And it's anywhere east of Exit 278 in West Memphis that you do not need to go, stop, or live. There's also a small line of houses just west of ASU-Mid South that is also a no-go.

Pine Bluff: Most of that city explains itself.
