I've decided to take a week to do so hiking and exploring in the mountains of Arkansas. I know I want to check out Mount Magazine and the Buffalo National River. Not sure if Mena is worth the drive. I got an exceptional deal on a hotel in Clarksville, so that's home base. I'll be making day trips from there. I prefer sweeping views and challenging elevation changes. Recommendations are appreciated.

I don't know about the Ozarks because the Ouachita's are my turf. Here is a Ouachita Link you may look at. https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/oua...reation/hiking.

In case you are not aware of it, the Ozarks is a plateau with deep valleys, while the Ouachita's are more of the "traditional" up and down peaks and saddles. Which ever you choose, welcome to The Natural State. Enjoy

I live in Newton county near the Buffalo river. We have dozens of great hiking trails here like Whitake point (Hawksbill crag), Lost Valley, Round Top trail, Alum Cove/Natural Bridge, etc. No shortage of beautiful things here to see.

I've not visited the Ouchita mts so can't answer for that area.

hawksbill crag, glory hole, goat trail, these are some "must see" hiking trails just up the road from clarksville. just google trails or hiking and add buffalo river, ponca, or newton county. great time of the year to really see more without the foliage. enjoy.

Mount Magazine is easy to "do". You can drive all the way to the top from Paris. There are some hikes around the summit, and there's a lodge and visitor's center. It's worth the trip up.

Some popular hiking areas to check out near the Buffalo are the Goat Trail and Whitaker Point/"Hawksbill Crag". Both have sweeping views. Goat Trail will blow your mind. Then be sure to come back and kayak that section of the Buffalo River and then look for the hikers up on the bluff.

Also, since it is "on your way" you might check out Petit Jean Mountain area NW of Little Rock. That would be a relatively quick drive from Memphis for you to enjoy in the future when you need your outdoor fix.

on your trip from memphis to clarksville, or your trip home, you should check out pinnacle mt in west little rock. it is a short hike up the mountain, but a really great view. should take about an hour or so out of your travel time and you could take the back roads to conway, another beautiful drive.

If you happen to drive Hwy 123 from the Clarksville area up to the Buffalo area, Sam's Throne is another hike worth checking out along the way. It's a beautiful drive, too. Most drives through that area are beautiful, though.

There should be some information available at the Arkansas Welcome Centers along the freeway. There are some good guidebooks that come in handy in planning your hikes.
