I completely agree with you. I lived in this town for 8 years and i hated it. Alot of the people are racist. When i was 17 i saW over 30 kkk members standing on the corner protesting by old train depot. I know you guys remember that. Their are hardly any jobs besides fast food. And their are alot of crooked people. I lived the through most of my childhood until i graduated and then i got the hell out of their. Their is no diversity and their is nothing for teens to do in that town. People need to know this info. Its important. Especially if you are not white!!

Should I assume that perhaps you meant to say, "I completely disagree..."? (You really need to work on your grammar, and use the spell checker.) I sure hope you are now someplace that you can enjoy living in. Thanks for you perspective, but we'll hopefully be there soon to visit and evaluate for ourselves. Best of luck to you where ever you now reside.

I think happyfeet24 and TheTruthIsALie have both been drinking from the same coolaid jar. Perhaps they spring from the same family tree and have run afoul of the local magistrate. They sure seem to have the same axe to grind.

Mena is a lovely little town. There may be some intolerance there, but that can always be found if you're looking for it no matter where you are. Even Heaven has a zero tolerance policy for some things. ;^)

I know Mena as a frequent visitor to my Cousin's place. He and his his Wife are retired and love the area. My Wife and I love the area simply because it is beautiful and there are no "chain" issue stores and eateries to consume what will be our limited retirement income. We will seriously consider Mena as a retirement possibility.
Retirement in our case will be an economic challenge but as my IRA advisor says "check your ego at the door on the way out".

There are limited to no jobs in Mena. Before moving to Mena your family needs to be self-supporting for the rest of your life plus able to drive. The is no public transportation. If you are a veteran then you do have access to a local VA outpatient clinic. The VA also has a van that takes folks to the VA hospital in Little Rock. People are friendly. There are many opportunities to join clubs, organizations and churches. If you are an artist then you will wish to check out all of the activities at the Mena Art Gallery. Mena is a small town with traditional, conservative thinking in all areas of life.

Thanks for the post Willy. Sorry for the delay in answering, but I was actually in Mena when you posted. Yes, we love the "green" of Mena, and found it to be very friendly with lots of other retirees. The Senior Center is very nice with an exceptional dining room. We were never able to make it there for an actual meal but stopped in and talked with the director at some length. We found a house we really like but it will take a lot of work, and that may present a problem from 1300 miles away. We couldn't afford to do too much back-and-forth traveling or we would be checking more than our ego at the door We'll just have to see how it plays out.

Default I live in mena

it is a wonderful place to live if you are retired, but the job situation leaves a lot to be desired it is not a good place for the working people unless they like working fast food. or have a teaching degree, we have a very good collage here and they are trying to go from a 2 year collage to a 4 year, so we are trying to grow. it might be best if you and your family could take a vacation and come take a look for about 2 weeks, and see for yourself.

Thanks for the post Ghostmom, Actually, we just got back from a couple weeks in Mena. Loved every minute of it. (Even the remnants of Ike that drenched us.) We are retired, as many others there we found, so the job situation is not really to important to us personally. The college was right behind us as we stayed at the Lime Tree. We loved the climate, loved the GREEN, and loved how friendly all the people we meet there were. Now we're back here in the 100+ heat (hopefully for not too much longer) and are missing Mena already.
Slim
