Clarksville,AR
Hello,
I am considering moving to Clarksville, AR area. I have a few job interviews in and around the area. I was just wanted some feedback. I currently live in New York but did grow up in a small midwestern town. I didn't know how easy it is for a single person (without kids) to live in this area. If you could tell me about the area - anything you would like to share, I would appreciate feedback. Thanks!

Ermm...is there a specific reason you are considering Clarksville? That are in general is not the most friendly to outsiders and especially northerners and there isn't a lot for singles to do. Its an economically depressed area geared heavily towards older people. Plus you would most likely have to commute to Ft. Smith for work and that would not be any fun. Most people on this forum will recommend you look into NWA. You can find plenty of small towns within commuting distance to Bentonville, home of the Wal-Mart machine. Fayetteville has a lot to do for singles as it is a college town. Also take a look at Conway and the Little Rock suburbs (the LR metro is not Baghdad dispite what people on this forum will try to tell you). There are plenty of safe places to live. Russellville might not be bad either but its a little far from everything.

I wouldn't move to Clarksville if you're just getting out of New York.
It's nice if you're wanting to settle down, but I think you're going to be miserable. Especially as a single northerner.

If you can go "around the area", I'd look more toward Russellville - but to be honest, a single person is not going to find much to do there either. I think either spot could be some serious culture shock for you unless you are really prepared to scale back and settle way down, or unless you come from a very tiny town in New York state. If 1980 has anything to do with the year of your birth, I'd say keep looking.

Poppycock. I'm 23 and single and Russellville is still too big for me.
Although I'm from the middle of nowhere Mississippi, so anywhere over about 7,000 people is too much.
I guess we should add "unless you're from a podunk little place and get more enjoyment out of watching animals and sitting on a porch than you do from culture and art"....haha, if that's true, then Clarksville is the place to be. Although I really didn't like Clarksville either way.

Can you explain more about "why" you are so down on Clarksville? Why is it so bad to live there?

When I lived in Clarksville in the late 70's, I found it to be a dirty old town in a beautiful part of the country. Chock-full of the biggest hypocrites I've ever met, its in a "dry" county and had without a doubt more alcoholics-and drug addicts- per capita than anywhere I have lived. The "conservatives" claimed they didn't want evil alcohol in THEIR town, but would regularly flood across the county line to buy as much as the law will allow, pop open a 6-pack and drive home! What a waste of scenery!

nice to hear that you are openminded enough to base your opinion on people you knew THIRTY years ago, most of whom are probably either in a cemetary or nursing home by now

Sorry, but I still have family there and went back 5 years ago--still the same depressed economy based on the same good ol' boys running the show(just the sons/daughters in office now), same tax dollars flooding over into other counties for alcohol/entertainment revenue, same run-down buildings and boarded-up businesses down town. Don't get me wrong, there are some wonderful people from and in Clarksville, but the town has never even come close to living up to its potential, and thats the way the majority of the locals like it. I personally know at least a dozen people who tried to start businesses there and failed at least in part due to the extreme prejedice towards 'outsiders' and the locals complete lack of education. Yes, the cost of living is low, but good luck making one!
