18 kids and no credit cards, no debt, everything paid with cash.... I admire the daylights out of them. Oh, and those kids seem very well behaved.. at least from what one can tell from the TV.

I'd never heard of the Duggars until someone mentioned them here, but from what I've read I don't see anything to hate about them, unless their way of life possibly pricks people's conscience about being selfish, shallow, materialistic, or something like that.
I know they can't be perfect people, no one is, but if they are taking care of their kids on their own, have a stable, loving family, and aren't breaking any laws, more power to them! I personally couldn't handle having 18 kids (my sorry body wouldn't be able to take it!), but if they can, that's their business. This is America, remember, home of the free?

Well, a quite large issue is overpopulation, if everyone followed their lifestyle the entire species would have one hell of a problem. Even then the problem is not that they are having a lot of kids, the problem is they are having a lot of kids that live an American Arkansas Lifestyle. Their environmental impact, going off of area averages, is equivalent to the damage of 100 New Yorkers, the greenest group of people in the country.
Edit: The family of 20 being equivalent to 100 New Yorkers is not actually going on the Arkansas average, if that where the case the case 20 Arkansans is equivalent to around 150 New Yorkers, I was ball parking it based on the assumption they have a less than normal materialistic lifestyle, but still slave to the automobile and McMansion.
So their lifestyle is certainly not one society should be encouraging and if that means condemning them as freaks to prevent it from being a cultural norm then perhaps that is a good thing.

This is a lie. In the aggregate, the world is not overpopulated. Pockets of it may be, but the U.S. is not one of them. Fertility rates here are barely above replacement rate, and much of the population growth here is due to immigration. Western Europe is declining in population.

Can you source your methodology? It sounds like nothing more than liberal hogwash, and that's coming from an Obama voter. And you needn't concern yourself with it becoming a cultural norm. The vast majority of women have no desire to have as many childen as Mrs. Duggar. It's a rare case. And as has already been pointed out, they're not asking for government handouts, so it's none of our business.

Normally people who have a negative opinion of a place haven't lived in the worst of worst places. I grew up in NWA and after living some very "interesting" (Read: High crime, rude people, dump) places, I've come to the realized that place isn't bad.. at all. You cannot have everything you want in one place; it's all about give-and-take.

Possibly Orville Faubus, the Duggars, or Mary Steenbergen is a reason to hate Arkansas. I hate Utah because of the Osmonds. I hate Minnesota because it is the home of Target & curling is moderately popular.
Why do people hate Pee Wee Herman? I think he's a genius.

I lived in Texas, California, Louisiana and Worked in arkansas for a year. Texarkana to be exact. And I can tell you that It's the most Retarded State I have ever lived in. Most of the people living there are just... weird.
The roads are ridiculously unmaintained. Just carrying a conversation with an Arkansan made me feel like a retard. There understanding of life in general is just naive and old fashioned. Felt like I had took a trip back to the 20's or some ****. HATED IT!
