Silverspank is on a distinguished road
I have lived in FL, GA, TX, ME, KS, GA again, and now AR. Of all these places where I have lived a average of 5-6 years, (exception of ME-18 months). I have never seen anything like this. AR is beautiful if you can get past all the trailers and trash, nothing against trailers, but they seem to go hand-in-hand. Sad!

Some people would rather not spend 30 years paying for a house. Myself included. Do you know how many rods and reels, deer rifles and Pabst Blue Ribbons you can buy with $150,000?? A mobile home suits the needs of people like us just fine thank you!

The state flat sales tax rate is 6% on most durable goods, 3% on groceries (with further reductions planned), and various other rates on other goods as shown here:
DFA | Office of Excise Tax Administration | Sales and Use Tax | State Tax Rates

Each county may levy it's own sales tax. Pulaski County for example is at 1%. All county rates are shown here:
DFA | Office of Excise Tax Administration | Local Tax Rates by County

In addition to this, cities may also levy their own sales taxes as well. Little Rock is 0.5%, North Little Rock is 1%, Maumelle is 1%. All municipality sales tax rates are given here:
DFA | Office of Excise Tax Administration | Sales and Use Tax | Local Tax Rates by City

There are definitely some towns where the state, county, and city sales taxes can add to around 11% but the 6-9% range appears more typical.

I was going to say about the same: I always think in terms of about 9%, still higher than the national average, but other states we have lived in are doing a good job of catching up, plus our insurance and property taxes are lower here.

I would like to respond to this. While I grew up in St. Louis, both my parents were from Arkansas. I spent most of my Summers and pretty much every holiday in Corning with my grandparents and assorted Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. I have wonderful, wonderful memories of Corning. It was a sweet, kind town filled with caring, decent people. Even as a teenager, we loved to go.

Well, I'm nearing retirement years and after many years in Michigan, I do not care to retire here. Don't want to live in a big City, so St. Louis is out. I started thinking of living my golden years in Corning. So, started researching. Topix was my start. Well, the Corning Topix is a joke. If one goes to read what the people of Corning have to say, you will walk away disgusted by the gossip, the slandering of young people, the rumors of drug use and talk of the cosntant bed hopping. Now, I realize those are simply rumors, but I'll tell you what bothered me the most. It was the total lack of spelling and grammar on the forum. Appalling. I recognize that these handful of people do not necessarily reflect the entire population of Corning, but it was enough to convince me Corning may not be the place for me. To be fair, I do plan a visit this Summer while on break. I want to see for myself.

I even started a thread here asking people about Corning hoping they might convince me it was not the mess portrayed on the forum. So far, I've only received a few replies and they were for the most part negative.

I've never been to Corning, as I prefer the mountainous areas of Arkansas, but think about this.....I've found that most of the people on the small-town Topix sites are teenagers or ne'er-do-wells that are on welfare and don't have anything else to do. The decent people are working or otherwise occupied with something worthwhile. The great people in Corning probably outnumber the idiots that are on Topix!

Personnally, I would rather have a Toy Hauler camper and homestead.
