Question Smell of air--Fayetteville

Could anyone explain what is the smell in the air in Fayetteville? Is it coming from the chicken processing plants?

Thinking of relocating there, but reluctant after having visited twice and constantly noticing the smell in the air.

Thanks.

I've been to countless basketball, football, and baseball games in Fayetteville at the UA campus. I have NEVER noticed the smell of anything in the air other than beer and hotdogs. Maybe you were visiting in a location near one of Tyson's chicken processing plants. I don't know, but I can assure you that the smell doensn't linger over the whole city.

I agree with the previous post. I lived in Fayetteville for five years and very rarely did I ever notice a smell in the air, but it is probably coming from the chicken plants. Don't let that affect your decision to move to Fayetteville. It is wonderful there and again I rarely smelled anything.

Default What's that smell?????

Sometimes in the spring and more often in the fall, farmers spread turkey litter (that's crap to you and me) over their pastures as cheap fertilizer.

It smells awful for a couple of weeks, but you wouldn't smell it downtown, just on the way in or out.

It's chicken farms. You can smell it when you step off the plane at XNA. Locals don't even notice it.

Default Question--air/water quality fayetteville

Thanks for your reply. However, and just to clarify, I haven't noticed any substantial smell right when you get off the plane at XNA, as you had commented about. Only in the Fayetteville, Springdale, Johnson area. And I've been told that it is normal for the air to smell in the Johnson and Springdale area due to chicken processing plants and chicken feed plants, but I've smelled it in Fayetteville also. Granted these small communities are right next door to each other. You seem to know a lot about the area--I guess you are from Arkansas. Then do you know where chicken processing plants are located in Fayetteville?
Thanks!

I'm a former resident of the area, grew up about an hour or so to the east and got my degree at the university. I don't remember any chicken processing plants in Fayetteville proper. I think they're all in Springdale/Lowell but to be honest, I never paid attention to precisely where they were. I'm about 98% certain the majority of the odors don't come from the processing plants but are really from the farms. You can smell feed mills for maybe a mile or so but that smell to me isn't majorly offensive like the smell of the chicken litter is. We lived in Farmington for about a year (on the west side of Fayetteville). We had some chicken farms about a mile or two away and hardly noticed the smell unless the weather was just right. I'm not sure if we just got used to it or not. Every time we go back to visit, we smell it immediately.

I live near Fayetteville, and I have no idea what your are talking about. First of all Fayetteville onlu has one processing plant and it is away from the main part of town. Secondly Fayetteville is one of the most strict cities in Arkansas (regards to being clean, nice, landscaped, noise, etc etc) so I know if there was a "stinch" the city goverment would put a stop to it ASAP! If you are in Springdale, Johnson, Lowell yes there are feed plants, processing plants all over, so yes you would have a smell then. There are chicken, and hog farms but most of those are not in Fayetteville.

Yea, I agree with Sherrenne .... Fayetteville city leaders would not allow any type of manufacturing that omitted smell or noise that was offensive. A few years ago they ran off a company called “Bakery Foods” (or something like that) because of overpowering odors ... anyone remember this? I think they also gave Hanna’s Candles heck about the smell of potpourri in the air and Hanna’s ended up buying some elaborate air buffering system to eliminate by-product from their scented candles from entering the atmosphere. Pro-active leadership within the city is part of what makes Fayetteville such a great place.

If your smelling anything in Fayetteville I would suspect it is the chicken processing plants and feed mills in Springdale which is approximately six miles north of Fayetteville. On certain days if the wind is blowing south you may pick up that odor but I honestly have to say I have never smelled it in Fayetteville. However, when going to Sam’s Club in Springdale and upon getting out of the car I have about gagged before from the smell so I know what your talking about.

If Fayetteville Smells too bad (maybe from the uppety residents with their heads in their rears) try Rogers or Bentonville, about 20 miles north of Fayetteville on I-540. There isn't the smell, and the people are great. Bentonville is a little pricey though.
