Hi all! We'll be travelling up in early January from New Orleans. We're not sure if we'd drive through through Memphis or AR, but we'd travel through MO until we hit Kansas City and onto Denver, CO. We've never been to MO, so we'd love some advice on routes and places to stay in Branson or Springfield. Not sure about snow conditions, either. We want a scenic drive - staying safe in winter conditions, of course. Not sure about ice and snow conditions in January. We want to stay safe but have a memorable drive. Wouldn't want to roll off of the road before we reach our final destination. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check weather conditions ahead of time. You can go to idrivearkansas.com (also an app) for road conditions. There is sometimes icy and/or snow at higher elevations. Snow usually isn't a problem on the highways, ice can be.

Travel up I-55 to Memphis.
In Memphis, get on I-40 west.
Travel through AR, go 73 miles past Little Rock and exit #81 at Russellville.
Head north on Hwy 7 (will become Scenic Byway 7). This will take you through some beautiful scenery and when you get into Harrison AR, turn left on Hwy 65 and follow it through Branson all the way to Springfield.

Not typically a lot, but when it does snow, the highway is salted and plowed. It's the ice that can be a problem.

If there is snow, January is the most likely time for it. Ice storms can be just as likely. It could also be 70. Hard to say.
Snow chances don't pick up until you're north of Springfield, especially KC, but they only average 20 inches a year, so it's not exactly the snow belt. I'd be most concerned with blizzard conditions in Kansas with all that wind, but they can also have lots of sun that time of year.
If you're going through Memphis, you're going through Arkansas at some point to get to KC. The most logical route is I-555/U.S. 63 through Jonesboro then on up past West Plains to 60 over to Springfield. From there, 13 north to 7 and then over to I-49 north. It's a good 4 lane all the way through there.
Those parts of Arkansas are a little less likely to get frozen precipitation and then the roads in Missouri have been straightened, widened, and flattened more and they do a fairly good job of clearing things once the snow or ice stops coming down. But, that part of MO has a slightly higher chance of the frozen stuff. It's a crapshoot.

Hollynia gave good advice for scenery. You can also take 65 north out of Conway. Scenery is fine, and the road is more developed with more stuff along it. 7 will be more pleasant if the weather is okay, which it most likely would be.
Another option is to go over to I-49 in Louisiana and up to Texarkana. There's a missing link of 49 between there and Fort Smith so you just go up U.S. 71. through there and get back on 49 via 40 around Van Buren. The drive up to NWA has scenery then there's another missing link of the interstate in Bella Vista, but it's seamless. I-49 then goes all the up into KC. The south side loop will run over towards Topeka or you can stay straight, once again be on 71, and that takes you to I-70 downtown for a more interesting drive through town.

If you stop in the Branson/Springfield area, Branson is a bit more interesting for a tourist. Springfield has some points of interest also. They both have plenty of national chains, but Branson will have more bnb's.
