Default Moving to Fayetteville

My husband and I are looking at moving out of Memphis, TN by the end of the year and we're looking at Fayetteville. He has stayed in state parks around there, and I have worked a week in Russellville, so we don't know much about the area, but we have at least seen it.

We like Fayetteville because the University offers the major my husband wants and there is an archaeology firm in Lowell, so hopefully I could get on with them. If not, I could do general office work or retail. I would assume a college town would have enough of that type of work to go around. Is that right? My husband has 9 years of warehouse experience. Will that get him anywhere? Is Wal-mart pretty much the place to work in warehousing, or are there others?

We're planning on coming for just a weekend to see Fayetteville itself. What should we see in that weekend? We want to get some sense of day-to-day life there...as much as we can in 2 days! We plan on mostly driving around.

Also, does anyone happen to know about any Judo classes in or not too far from Fayetteville? If not that, is there submission wrestling or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? My husband studies Judo now and wants to keep it up.

Thanks for any help.

Fayetteville is probably the nicest, most interesting eclectic town in Arkanasas if not the entire south. It has Real culture, charming neighborhoods of every kind, great restaurants and shopping. Fayetteville really represents the best of what Arkansas has to offer. If I were coming to Fayetteville for a visit here is what i'd do....Id check out the beautiful Farmers market one morning. I'd drive up to Mt. Sequoyah and watch the sunset over the city. I'd explore all the little shops and galleries along Dickson St and then go drive or stroll throught the gorgeous historic neighborhoods and maybe visit the headquarters house. Then, I'd head over to the award winning Fayetteville Public Library which is a cozy spot with stunning mountain views. I'd cap it all off with a walk around the beautiful University of Arkansas campus where the redbuds, dogwoods, and cherry blossoms are now in bloom... If you have a little extra time you may want to take a short drive to Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park(about 15 min away) or Devil's Den state Park (in the Boston Mountains about 30 min away)

Couldn't have said it better. You didn't forget my favorite spot! God I love Mt. Sequoyah!

Welcome to Arkansas.

As to warehouse work - WM has several around Bentonville, but there are others. Tyson, Allen Canning, Zero Mountain, and other third party logistics/warehousing companies.

Thanks, everyone. You've made Fayetteville sound really nice and we'll definately try to check out all of the stuff in-town, at least. And it's a relief to hear there's possibly a lot of job options for my husband.

You can do the bulk of this by simply parking on Dickson St. and just walking around. The square (where the farmers' market and the headquarters house is, amongst other shops, bars, and restaurants) is just a couple blocks south of Dickson, the UA campus begins at the corner of Arkansas and Dickson, and the historic district begins at the corner of College and Dickson. And Dickson St. is not a very long street, either. Notice a trend here?

Oh yeah, and the library is just a couple blocks south of Dickson, also, on I believe West St. (which crosses Dickson).

Thanks, Hog-I!
It's awesome to hear advice like "walk around town" after living in Memphis for a few years. I don't think I would tell people to do a whole lot of that here.
Is there anywhere we shouldn't walk around? How about after dark?

I've walked around all areas at all times of the night, and never felt unsafe. My fondest memories are walking around Mt Sequoyah at night...god i wish the summer would hurry up and get here, i wanna go home for a visit!

I would only say don't walk around south of 6th Street, save the area immediately around the baseball stadium. Even then it is highly unlikely anything bad would happen. However, every town has a run-down part, and south of 6th Street is Fayetteville's.

There aren't any real reasons to go there anyway, so you probably wouldn't even be faced with this prospect.

And walking around after dark is no problem either. The heart of Fayetteville is near downtown and campus, so there are a ton of folks walking and biking after dark.

I used to live a block from Dickson and I hardly ever used my car, day or night.
