I spent a lot of time in Mena a few years ago investigating the Municipal Court System.

At the time, it was common knowledge, if unspoken, that Mena wasn't the place to be after dark if you were "of color". Mena isn't the only town like that of course and I thought...had hoped...attitudes had changed. Maybe not. That would be one good reason I personally would never choose to live there.
Wilhelmena State Park is nearby. Oklahoma isn't far away. There's a bit of history involving drug running, I believe. The surrounding scenery is beautiful...the drive from Hot Springs to there is one of my favorites. When we were last there, I noticed several new additions, business-wise; the town looked "spruced up". Still, not enough to lure me there as a permanent resident.
