I'm thinkin' a view is all you're going to get now that the water has been shut off to that whole area for non-payment.

I think they said the water bill was over $16,000.

No steaks at the bluff steakhouse fer awhile

I plan to take a mini vacation trip( from Minnesota ) to that area next week (West Plains MO, Cherokee Village, Horsehoe Bend, Mountain Home )

I heard a lot about that area for years and decided to see what it's like.

I didn't notice any motels in Cherokee Village, so we will probably stay in West Plains and do "day trips" from there.

Anybody got suggestions for--"what not to miss seeing" ?????????

You could stay at one of the three hotels in Hardy, not far from Cherokee Village. Our favorite is Spring River Lodge.

Good suggestion about the motels in Hardy.

What not to miss?

The views for one. There's a restaurant up on a hill called "Beach Club BBQ" that's real good, has a great buffet on Sunday-non, and the view to the west is great. Sitting inside, you get a good view of the houses sprinkled through the hills.

Hardy Old Town is a tourist draw, pretty cool for a first-time see.

If one wanted to purchase any alcoholic beverage whilst there, Thayer, MO is close up the road.

The Bluff Steak House has a real nice view, and good food if it gets it's well drilled quickly. It has a bed & breakfast also. Just a *wee* bit tricky to find. One sign, not too big, at the drive in.

From Hardy, south through Cherokee Village, Highland, and Ash Flat, there's a number of good restaurants and services.

Try the double cheeseburgers at the Ash Flat Dairy Bar. They're not that big, and will melt in your mouth.

The Spring River runs through Hardy, a lot of post-card shots.

What I think is a hoot, and I take northern visitors to for a walk-through, is the Price Chopper grocery store in Hardy.

The owner is also a Glock dealer, and there's this big Glock display at the end of the checkout counter.

Ya know...just in case you need a gallon of milk and a 9mm on the way home.

Cherokee Village has restaurants and a bar, and has some very tranquil settings.

If you want a really scenic drive, take 9 south out of Melbourne and go to either Blanchard Springs, or Mountain View. The drive itself will take you through a nice mountain range, and both the mentioned areas offer family entertainment. Mountain View on the weekends, Blanchard Springs withb it's cave tours and such all the time.

Ya'll have any particular intrests?

We got something on the plate for just about everyone.

I agree with RogMar on all the things he wrote. I'd not been in the Price Chopper yet, will have to check out that display!! Another place for breakfast, etc near the Price Chopper is the "Corner Booth". Great food, esp the Belgian Waffles!

When we're out at our cabin/land below Evening Shade we always make an overnight stay at Hardy and check out the main street stores, etc. Lots to see in the area and lots to do.

many thanks to all of you for the detailed info.

I have only been to Arkansas once and we took #7 from Harrison all the way to Hot Springs.

The scenery was beautifull (and that was in late Jan 04)

Marmac,

"I didn't notice any motels in Cherokee Village, so we will probably stay in West Plains and do "day trips" from there."

I think that's a very bad idea in my opinion.

You'll spend all your time in a car and never get a true feel of northern Arkansas. Yes, there is no motel inside Cherokee Village, correct, but vacation home rentals are the big thing in the village and very popular. For the price of a hotel room, you can rent a single family home or a townhome instead. You can stay one night or as many as you like. No big deal. Moderator cut: edit Simply search online for one well known real estate company inside Cherokee Village city limits or another well known one out on the 4 lane across the street from the south entrance, and you will get all the info you need on nightly rentals for your trip south. It's the "real" way to check out the area. From there, you can do your shorter day trips to Horseshoe Bend and MH. Hope that helps you.

I think Rogmar gave you some good advice on what to do and where to eat. The Price Chopper story was funny.

CVer72529 is absolutely right. Stay in Cherokee Village in one of the many nightly or weekly rentals. You won't regret it. It is the way to go for sure.
