I was going to say about the same, as for us being in the top 10, I bet, if you take size and population into consideration we might be in the top 10: other states, NM, AZ (as we know) NV for many years, not anymore, TX, OK, OR and Washington oh and Colorado. I do not have the stats on this, I am sure we could find them, but I do believe in stats anyway. I do know we have a heck of a lot of people here from California.
Hotair, certainly not all the people moving to AR are seniors. We have 2 neighbors (different homes) who recently moved here to excape CAlifornia. Both have elementary aged kids.
You need to re-think this.

There are some predictions that CA could lose population in the 2010 Census for the first time ever - and may lose a Congressional seat as a result.
BTW I'm not in this forum to bash Arkansas. All states have their good and bad aspects.

I can probably buy most of what you are saying. Yes, if there is a positive side as to what is happening in your state it is the reduction in illegals. Of course I am one of those skeptics (as you know) that doesn't take an article like that too seriously. I would probably think, more on the lines of, the influx of illegals has slowed down and some have returned to Mexico. As for blasting AR, I didn't get the opion for your last comment that you were blasting us.

Not meant to be all inclusive. I just said older people are moving here, which is not to say that they are the only people. I would be interested to see the demographics on the people leaving and coming into California.

I have heard it said, it is the rust bowl or the dust bowl in reverse. Everyone in the mid west and the border line states like OK and AR moved west in the 30s, then again, after the 2nd world war, now many of those families ( a few generations later) are returning to places with lower cost of living, a better and more stable job market (I do not mean more jobs or more upscale jobs) just a little more stability in the market plus friendly people, slower pace and it feels more like the America people think of when they see a Norman Rockwell painting.

I am curious what is the attraction? I know that Californians are used to having the mountains and scenic desert on one side and the Pacific ocean beaches on the other.
And you folks are also used to reliably mild weather. There are no beaches nearby here in NWA. So what is the attraction?
Understand I am not criticizing anyone or anything - I am just curious and want to understand.

I am personally attracted to Arkansas because I grew up there and know the decent people and beautiful surroundings that Arkansas has to offer.
The main thing for my move is that I am going to be able to buy a house for cash in Arkansas. Housing prices here in California are ridiculous and also the problem of illegal immigration has destroyed the economy and job market here.
I personally would rather live in central Arkansas because Northwest Arkansas has WAY too many illegal immigrants for me. The Tyson plant and other factories there that have been hiring all of the illegals have helped destroy that part of Arkansas and at the rate they are multiplying there, it looks like Northwest Arkansas will be another illegal haven with pink stuccoed homes, mariachi music, crime, and kids in school who speak no English.

If you consider all of NWA the illegal problem really isn't that great. Not all Tyson workers are illegal even if many are hispanic. I think most of this area does not cater to illegals like CA,Az, TX and NM as far as things like language. Yes, we hear some Spanish and some kids speak little or no English. Recently we were in the emergancy room at a hospital in Springdale. Just sitting there for about 45 minutes we were a bit taken back by 2 different situations where the sick person spoke little of no English. My first thought was, OMG, we have moved back to NM. Still this is not the norm and as I mentioned not everyone from Mexico, working here is illegal. Certainly we are a looooooooooooooooooog way from what CA and some other border states are faced with.

Gentle reminder: The topic of this thread is "What is attracting California and west coast folks to Northwest Arkansas?"
The OP's post stated:

This is the Arkansas forum. Please keep the discussion focused on Arkansas and the reasons why folks from other areas are attracted to Arkansas. This thread is not about why people are leaving their state. It is about why those people are attracted to Arkansas.
Discussions about California or other states and their problems belong in the forums for those states. General discussions about immigration, illegal or legal, belong in the forums dedicated to those issues.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Judging from your previous posts, I think Arkansas will be as pleased to have you here as you are to come home.

As a 3rd generation Californian, I can tell you why Arkansas. The people seem a kinder and gentler people. The pace is no so hectic, the traffic not so death defying and the crime rate lower. The town I grew up in here had 7,000 people, it now has 110,000. Too many people, I grew up knowing darn near everyone and no one now, unless I attend a class reunion. Every time I have been to Arkansas I have felt a calming of the spirit that overwhelms me. Now that we are retired and don't have to "make a living" what I find matters most is quality of your life. We are planning a move eventually, it really depends on what my son-in-law can find workwise. Can't run off and leave the grandson!!!
