It sounds like it would probably take us too long (for the kids!) to get to the cabin from LA, though, going up 71.
I'm not sure where you're driving from in LA and you may have already checked this drive out but from I35 just north of Arkadelphia take Hwy 7 thru Hot Springs to Ola and then Hwy 10 over to Havana and take the Mt Magazine Scenic Byway to Paris. Hwy 23 is just to the west of Paris off Hwy 22. You could take 23 back to your cabin from there. I've taken Hwy 7 but I have not had a chance to make this drive thru Mt Magazine yet but I've heard it's very nice.

Yes, that drive is very nice. Arkansas is such a great state to drive around in!

We always just take the most direct route there is from our house to Little Rock and then head west on I40, then north on 23. The kids are always ready to get there, and it takes us at least 7 hours as it is, usually more if we stop a lot.

The future I-49 (now I-549) is completed from Texarkana through Doddridge toward the Louisiana border.

I-49 does not go to Lake Charles. From Shreveport I-49 goes through Alexandria to Lafayette. There are plans to extend I-49 from Lafayette to New Orleans. To get to lake Charles from Shreveport you'd use U.S. Hwy 171.
