"One won't fill you up. They are about the size of cranberries. And I don't believe they are to be eaten raw. You will have to gather up a gallon or so of them to make jelly with. I've heard a wine can be made as well."
Oh ok, when I finally get moved there I will have to look around and see if I can find some. Being a hick from elsewhere has it's drawbacks .

Well then, may I suggest the Mayhaw Festival in El Dorado? It is held the first Saturday in May. There is usually another festival held in town at the same time: "Bugs, Bands and Bikes" (i.e. - crawfish boil, 'battle of the bands', and motorcycle show/parade).

That sounds like a lot of fun. Could you tell me where El Dorado is? The place we bought is 30 miles from Clinton. Is El Dorado anywheres near Clinton?

El Dorado is in the south central part of the state.
Follow Hwy US-65 south from Clinton to Conway, then I-40 from Conway to Little Rock, then US-167 from Little Rock to El Dorado. It is a 2hr drive from Little Rock to El Do. From Conway to Little Rock, about 30-40 minutes? As for Clinton to Conway, I haven't driven that stretch in well over 14 years, so I can't help you there...

Mems, I've lived a whole lot of my life in Arkansas and never heard of a mayhaw either. Must be a south Arkansas thing. Up in area of the Ozarks you've bought in, we have our own native fruits that you should look into.
One in particular that you might be interested in is the pawpaw. It's a small oblong fruit of a tree found mainly along densely thicketed river and creek banks. The fruit has a consistency similar to a banana. Pawpaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LOL...well now, you've got one over me. I've never heard of a pawpaw... I mean other than the "we went to mawmaw and pawpaw's house for Thanksgiving" kind.

LOL we can call it even then! Like I said, I'd never heard of a mayhaw before! Until I looked it up I figured maybe it was another word for mayapple or elderberries!

Yeah, I am right at the base of the Ozark National Forest off highway 254. I have never heard of a pawpaw or a mayhaw but we do have rocky mountain oysters here.... never had the stomach to eat one though . BTW..our neighbors called yesterday and said a family of skunks have moved in under our house there. I have a feeling I won't be visiting anytime real soon !

Don't know if you can still find any around El Dorado but before my mom would take them away from me to make jelly, we used to eat muscadines until we would get a bellyache. She would also make us shell purple hull peas until our fingers would turn purple. Golly, I miss those home canned purple hulls. Believe it or not, I can find canned purple hulls in one store here in Omaha. I believe they are canned in Ft Smith. Not as good as mom's but they'll do in a pinch.
